The pentagram is
one of the most
misunderstood symbols
in the modern age.
The pentagram, or five-pointed
star, has been in existence for
thousands of years. Over that time,
it has had many meanings (signifieds), uses, and depictions associated with it.
Some uses of the pentagram in
Western society descend from
occult traditions. However, it has
relevancy to early Christianity.
Was it used in mathematics? If so,
explain how.
Reveal the origin of the pentagram
and trace its history to the present
age. Use semiotic references as we
have learned in class.
How has the pentagram been rendered? Show examples of how it
has been represented for different
purposes (i.e., religion, fashion,
ritual, decoration).
Research may include an interview
with someone who has incorporated the pentagram into her/his
belief system and/or lifestyle.
You must include citations for
your research. Your research may
include primary and secondary
sources, which include interviews.
Beware of Wikipedia. A general
reference from Wikipedia is not
acceptable unless you use its references to a published article from a
reputable media source.
