Abstract
This short story written in the year 1971 is fit to be done in an academic setting and in for
anyone going through a hard time. The author brings a clear picture of the civil war that occurred
in Nigeria and later the civil peace that followed. What exactly happens after the civil war and
what does it signify? The story depicts an outstanding character of one Jonathan Igwebu who,
after the civil war makes use of his bicycle by turning it into a taxi which earns him money. He
repairs his family’s house and moves them back in. In this short story, it is evident that hard work
pays and that a peaceful environment is a home to success. Writing on this topic will enable me
and others to appreciate the importance of optimism despite situations.
Background
Civil peace begins by introducing a protagonist hero who goes by the name Jonathan
Iwegbu, and who portrays an optimistic attitude by being able to survive challenges after his
family and the nation at large have faced a terrible civil war. His family’s survival is one of the
causes of his happiness. We also find that he found his family’s bicycle where he had buried it.
And used it to serve his family as a means of transport and also a source of income. Jonathan
travels to Enugu where he finds his family. Though he was hoping for the best and expecting the
worst, he is amazed by finding out that only two doors had been destroyed. He, therefore, hires a
carpenter to repair the house where his family gets back to their house.

He is also reimbursed by the government the money he had lost during the war. But that
night he is awoken by armed men demanding their money back for they thought he was a
wealthy man. We see the armed men leader has trouble communicating fluent English but later
in the conversation, Jonathan decides to give them the money for he finds the money
unnecessary where the following morning they wake up and continues with their life as usual.
The significance of the topic
It talks about how those in power can be untrustworthy and how they abuse their power.
This occurred when an untidy military man threatened to take Jonathan bicycle by force and then
accepted to take a bribe. Even after the declaration of peace, the government-owned Coal
Corporation remains closed. The police and the watchmen refuse to help him during a robbery
incident. Jonathan’s success praises the power of positive thinking. We find this optimism first
when we are told that he had just lost his son, but he looks on the positive side of him being a
lucky and seeing the blessings he has received. Among them were the resurrected family bicycle
and his partially damaged “little zinc house” and the extra-Gracia money he received. Though he
had greatly received a blow by receiving a great loss during the war, he is able to separate from
the past and hope for the best in the future, and this allows him to succeed.
We can’t miss the point of war within the story. We can see that his house is still standing
though the neighboring area had been reduced into fragments. He accepts the destruction that
had been given by the war. Homeless people had gathered around the unopened mine hoping for
work and feeding what was in their small metal tins. The war had also resulted in the birth of
thief gangs. God is also invoked in this book where mostly referred to it as fate. Jonathan mostly
refers to positive outcomes as a miracle or a blessing. When he was in a bad situation, he would

that nothing puzzles God. Through this, he had freed himself from the agony of asking God why
certain events had happened to him as a result of the war.
Statement
The author was trying to define what happens during and after a war has occurred.
Therefore he chooses Jonathan to define those who are always optimistic and tries not to blame
anyone for everything that has happened. We are also in a position to see different characters in a
community. Different characters portrayed different people in the community we are in and how
people react when faced in by a calamity giving an example of war.
Hypothesis
What would have happened if Jonathan’s character could have appeared just before the war had
come to an end?
What could have happened if Jonathan’s character was a total contradictory of what is portrayed
in the book?
Which other calamities could have been used to portray Jonathan’s best character?
