Module 2 – Course Proposal Sample
Directions: Complete the table below by responding in the column on the right.

My Name:
Ima Champion
Title of the Degree I am Seeking:
(eg. MED: Teaching and Learning:
Student Services or MED: Program
Specialist: Math Specialist or MAT:
Special Education)
M.Ed. Teaching and Learning – Leadership – Non Licensure
My Current Position: (eg.
elementary teacher, principal, etc.)
Teacher – 3rd Grade
City and State Where I Live:
Raleigh, NC
Directions: Use the “Response” section to address the prompts below. (Be thorough in your responses. A
nicely written paragraph with at least 3 to 7 sentences per prompt is expected. Be sure to use complete,
descriptive sentences that fully explain what you are trying to convey. The more description you provide, the
easier it will be for your instructor to understand what your project is going to be and why it is important.)
1. Project Description: What is the actual project or product that you will be creating / producing? Now,
describe this project in detail.
Response: The project will be a substitute folder; it will contain all of the information a given teacher may need
throughout a typical school day in a concise, user-friendly format. Being a substitute teacher can be challenging and at
times overwhelming when going into a classroom. Many times a teacher has either planned poorly or provided too
much information that is not realistic for a substitute to use. With this concise, user-friendly folder, a substitute will have
all the needed information. Since substitute teachers do not have much time to read numerous pages and forms in
order to grasp the important information he/she will need, a user friendly format will be provided.
2. Rationale: State why you chose this project topic. How does this project fit into the broad area of
education? How does it relate and/or benefit to your current work position or the job you are seeking?
Response: The rationale of this project is to enable a substitute teacher to have access to the information he/she will
need to know for the day, in hopes that the day will flow much smoother with this additional help. Proper instruction, as
well as the way it is presented, is crucial for a substitute’s overall success. Both are needed, or else he/she will not know
what to do throughout the day. It will help me because, as a classroom teacher, I can’t be there every day of the school
year. When I am unable to be at school due to sickness or a personal day, this substitute folder will be a resource I have
prepared ahead of time to assist the substitute who will teach in my place.
3. Statement of Purpose: State what you plan to accomplish with your project.
Response: I plan to create a Word document file – with page breaks to separate the distinct parts – and create
all of the necessary resources a substitute teacher would need to have to have a safe, effective, successful day
in my classroom. Parts will include:
-rosters for each of my class periods
-seating charts for all my class periods
-contact information for important personnel in the building (eg. principal, secretary, guidance counselor, etc),
-contact information for my grade level colleagues who the sub can ask “non-emergency” questions to,
-emergency information for fire, tornado, etc.
-a map of the building
-a list of my special duties (eg. lunch, recess, bus, etc.)
-information concerning students with specific medical needs
-essential information for my students with special needs will require certain accommodations
-a list of students that will be helpful to ask questions and a list of students with behavioral concerns that will
need additional supervision and monitoring
-a list of basic procedures such as taking attendance, using the restroom, using the established school wide
discipline plan, transitions between classes, etc.
-the academic section where I will list what learning activities will need to occur for each class period
-a “How Was Your Day Form” will be provided so the substitute can leave me correspondence about how the
day went (eg. how much academic content was covered, what behavioral concerns may need to be addressed
when I return, etc.)
4. Research-Based: State what sorts of journal and/or article information you will use to complete this
project (i.e., what will you look for? What connection does your project topic have to current issues? What
current issues need to be addressed with your topic? What issues do you perceive you will research?).
Response: I will review articles that target effective strategies for substitute teachers, effective class
management strategies for substitute teachers, and planning and organization techniques for teachers. I will
use the education databases found at https://www.liberty.edu/library/databases/?s=11 ; I anticipate using
articles from such peer reviewed journals as The Record (from Kappa Delta Pi), Kappan (from Phi Delta Kappa),
and also articles from teacher specific magazines such as Instructor (from Scholastic) and The New Teacher
Advocate (from Kappa Delta Pi). I plan to use websites such as Pinterest and Teachers Pay Teachers to get
ideas. I will also consult education texts that target the topics of essential planning and organizational
techniques.
5. Projected Application: Explain how you plan to use your project once it is completed? Be specific on the
audience(s) who will use it…
Response: The projected application of this project is to use this in my own classroom on days I am absent. It will allow
me to leave the folder on my desk, just in case something were to happen and I was unable to be in school the following
day. Too many times teachers are caught off-guard by sudden illness (self, spouse, child) and/or an emergency occurs.
This will prevent me from having to drive to school early that morning to leave plans or call in and have to guide the
secretary or a colleague with things to print and gather when they are already busy with their own morning tasks. With
this folder, as a teacher, I will not be caught off-guard. In fact, it would go far beyond just leaving lesson plans. Instead of
just lesson plans, a substitute teacher would find a folder containing current, up-to-date information presented in a
user-friendly format that would provide him/her with all the information he/she needs to know for the day.
6. Description of the projected outcomes: State what you think will happen as a result of completing this
project. Keep it specific so that you can document whether or not it occurs.
Response: The projected outcomes for this project include: a smoother day for all involved, the substitute teacher, the
students, and for myself (not having to drive to the school the morning I will be out). The substitute will not feel lost or
unsure of what to do in the situations that may arise while I am away. He/she will not feel overwhelmed with long
letters of information which he/she has no time to read. Instead, he/she will have a folder with all the information in a
user-friendly format to which he/she can refer to throughout the day. The day will go much smoother and everyone will
be appreciative.
At the end of the folder, I will leave a “How Was Your Day Form” and the form will have spaces for the
substitute teacher to leave me correspondence about how the day went (eg. how much academic content was
covered, what behavioral concerns may need to be addressed when I return, etc.). I will also leave some
rating indicators (eg. On a scale of 1 to 5 – 1 difficult and 5 easy, how easy were the plans to follow?) and
some open comments space for the substitute teacher to give me feedback on how helpful the substitute
folders was and if he/she has other feedback to improve it for the next substitute teacher that would use it.
