Class,
Here is an unedited brief of my past student for your review.
The relationship between the traditional 40 Hour work week and employee health.
Introduction
Many Americans work for companies that follow a traditional 40-hour work week, Monday
through Friday, with weekends off. The traditional 40-hour work week is not ideal for many
employees anymore. Working long hours can pose a variety of health issues on the average
employee however, it is necessary as most employees are paid as hourly employees. Although
money is a great motivator when working 40+ hours a week it makes having a work life balance
difficult and can be harmful to an individual’s health. “Working long hours, even at a desk, can
have serious repercussions for your physical and mental health and may even end up hurting
productivity in the long run (Bixby 2014)”. Working long hours causes employees to become
depressed because they do not have the time to spend with family and friends or are unable to
take time to enjoy various activities and hobbies. Reducing the work week will be beneficial to
an individual’s health and lifestyle. Employees will be able to have more time with their families
and will not be overwhelmed by the stressors that a 40-hour work week can create.
We used an exploratory approach while researching and collecting data to answer our
problem. We constructed and passed out a survey to 50 of our co-workers to find out their
thoughts on the 40-hour work week. The survey included questions such as: age, number of sick
calls, number of years on the job, etc. In using a casual- predictive study, we focused on multiple
variables and their relationship to the 40-hour work week. Raw data from our survey was pulled
and analyzed to determine the effects of long work weeks on employees. One of the relationships
we looked at is the correlation between number of hours worked and amount of employee sick
calls. Long work hours can cause employees to visit primary care physicians and psychiatrist
more than employees who work less hours. Employees who work long work hours are more
likely to have health problems due to fatigue. We also looked at the relationship between number
of hours worked and employee turnover as this is also an indicator of dissatisfaction. With data
analysis, we performed ANOVA, Chi-Square, and regression analysis to determine the
interaction of different groups and to test our hypothesis.
Problem Statement
The traditional 40-hour work week has become difficult for employees to maintain a work life
balance. By offering employees a modified schedule, they will be more efficient and productive
while gaining better physical and mental health.
Purpose
Our purpose is to show that a 40-hour work week is not ideal for a work life balance as it relates
to one’s health. A persons physical and mental health is affected by working long hours. The
factor behind the hours worked can be very stressful. We hope to find that changing the number
of hours worked in a day or the amount of days worked in a week will make a difference
mentally and physically. We also hope to find that it will also decrease the stress that is cause by
the number of hours worked and make better for a work life balance.
Research Questions
The following research questions were used to create the ANOVA tables to compare the groups.
1. Do men or women stay at the job longer?
2. Do younger or older employees take more sick days?
3. Do younger employees quit more often than older employees?
4. Do men or women take more sick days?
In creating questions for our Chi-Square Analysis, we used the above questions and created new
questions. The new questions are:
1. Are there more men or women in the work place?
2. Do men or women make a longer commute?
3. Which age group makes a longer commute?
For our Regression analysis, we created three research questions, those are:
1. Do employees with longer commute times take more sick days?
2. Do employees who take less sick days stay at the job longer?
3. Do employees with longer commute times quit the job more than employees with shorter
commute times?
Hypothesis
Ho1: There is no relationship between gender and time on the job. .
Ho2: There is no relationship between age and number of sick days taken.
Ho3: There is no relationship between age and time on the job.
Ho4: There is no relationship between gender and number of sick days taken.
Ho5: There is no relationship between age and gender.
Ho6: There is no relationship between gender and commute time.
Ho7: There is no relationship between commute time and age.
Ho8: There is no relationship between the number of sick days taken and commute time.
Ho9: There is no relationship between the number of sick days taken and time on the job.
Ho10: There is no relationship between commute time and time at job.
Discussion Rubric: Graduate
Your active participation in the discussion forums is essential to your overall success this term. Discussion questions are designed to help you make meaningful
connections between the course content and the larger concepts and goals of the course. These discussions offer you the opportunity to express your own
thoughts, ask questions for clarification, and gain insight from your classmates’ responses and instructor’s guidance.
Requirements for Discussion Board Assignments
