The Super Bowl has arrived here in Phoenix. People have paid thousands of dollars for
tickets and are ready for football and fun. But even here among all the festivities, thirteen years
after the fact, questions arise about what really happened in the events of 9/11. Apparently,
Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is one of the ones asking questions. According to Martin
Rogers, writing in USA Today, the Seattle coach has gained a following among 9/11 “truthers.”
“Two years ago,” writes Rogers, “Carroll met with Army chief of staff and four-star general
Peter Chiarelli and, according to Deadspin citing ‘sources,’ brought up many popular conspiracy
theories concerned with the attacks of September 11, 2001.” Carroll is not the only one.
Commercial pilots have organized to question the official version of events, making websites and
movies. Architects and engineers have organized and done the same. Highly respectable
members of the military and government too have asked for the truth about what happened that
day. After thirteen years of widespread doubt, it may be time for us to admit that the official
story of what happened on September 11, 2001 is not credible to a large number of people.

The official story of a terrorist attack executed by nineteen young men is familiar to all.
History.com, the website of the History Channel, expresses the commonly held view:
On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group
al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in
the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World
Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside
Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.

The work of institutions like the History Channel and so many others to honor the victims
and preserve the collective memory of those terrible events has been enormous, admirable, and
moving in its spirit. But I am one of those, like Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, who feel
that the History Channel version of what happened that day, like the official United States
government story of what happened, is incomplete and probably misleading.

That the official story of 9/11 is incomplete is a fact. This has been stated emphatically
and repeatedly by high, acting members of the United States government. Jamie Reno, writing
in International Business Times, reports that twenty-eight pages are blacked out of the Joint

Intelligence Committee Inquiry that was completed by the U.S. Congress to investigate the 9/11
attacks. Reno reports that Walter B. Jones, Representative of North Carolina, was given a chance
to read the blacked twenty-eight page section in 2013. James told the International Business
Times, “I was absolutely shocked by what I read. . . . What was so surprising was that those
whom we thought we could trust really disappointed me. I cannot go into it any more than that.
I had to sign an oath that what I read remain confidential. But the information I read
disappointed me greatly.” Representative James is not the only one. As long ago as 2002, 46
senators “demanded in a letter to President Bush that he declassify the 28 pages.” We know that
Bush never did so.
What could be so disappointing to senators and congressmen in those twenty-eight
blacked out pages? Why does the United States government choose not to inform the American
people of it? Perhaps by considering which spaces the U.S. government does not allow us to see,
piecing them together with those many details that do not ring true, we might triangulate on a
more satisfying explanation of what took place on September 11, 2001.
