Paper 3(900 words):
You will have the week to develop and write a researched literary analysis essay that clearly
states your position on one (1) of the 4 prompts below. You will state your ideas and support
your position with evidence from the text of the story/stories, using (at least) one additional
researched source.
Prompts:
Greed and all its various aspects has been a popular literary theme throughout history.
Money, greed, self-indulgence, and self-denial and how they interact, create many fictional
situations.
1. Discuss the role of money as it is shown through greed and sacrifice in at least two of the
works from modules 1-3
2. Discuss how at least two of the characters from any story from modules 1-3 associate the
desire for wealth and reputation of character with tragedy or death in regards to their own
desires.
America is a glorious melting pot of cultures and genders. However sometimes living in or
being from a mixture of these cultures results in problems and dilemmas in fiction.
3. Discuss the role of the woman as depicted as either mother or wife or
“other”. For example: The mother represents a pivotal character in the family’s selfacceptance of the cultural experience set against the larger culture in a wealthy
country. OR The wife is a symbol of loyalty and servitude, putting her spouse above all
else, including her own self interests. OR Woman is treated as an untouchable but desired
object, only to be obtained through force or against her own will. What do the characters
and situations in your choice of stories show us about these identity roles?
4. Select 2-3 pieces from modules 1-3 that show the attitudes of the historical culture of the
writer. Discuss the connection between these works and what they show in regards to
behavior toward others.
The essay must meet the following requirements:

It must be at least 900 words.
It must use at least one outside source (Consider using the Ivy Tech virtual library
Ebscohost database)
It must be in MLA format. Click HERE (Links to an external site.)Links to an external
site. to see the Purdue OWL’s guide to MLA formatting.
It must be saved as a .docx file.
It must adhere to basic academic conventions–write in third person (no use of “I” or
“you”).
It must adhere to grammar, spelling, and punctuation conventions. Consider submitting
your essay to Tutor.com for a free review (you have a prepaid subscription through Ivy
Tech).
Your essay must have a clear direct thesis statement and follow the general outline of
having an introduction that includes thesis statement, body that develops your position,
and conclusion that establishes final position, as well as a citation page for all works.
You must cite significantly from the primary texts being analyzed. Remember that the
evidence for an argument about literature is first and foremost from the literary text
under analysis. Critical commentary by published scholars (not Wikipedia,
dictionary.com or SparkNotes, etc. ) may be used as part of your paper to support your
points.
Warning: As the reader is already familiar with the literary work, there is no need to
include detailed plot summary. A summary of events in a story is not evidence, but
restating or explaining a situation that does develop the point is useful to the
reader. There is a difference between explanation and summary.
All references to the literary works being analyzed and to any critical texts must be cited
in the text and on a Works Cited page.

Paper 4(300 words):
Ibsen’s A Doll House
One of the central ideas of drama that focus on character interact is the idea of the
character’s growth and transformation. A 2 dimensional character suddenly become deeper,
or moves out of the image we have of them. They no longer fit into the framework we put
them in when first introduced to them. The character learns and changes their traits,
becoming deeper, whether for better or worse.
For your Reflective Essay, address the following character changes and plot point questions.

In Act I, we are introduced to the central character of Nora and her situations.
o What is her character like at this early stage?
o What is her dilemma and what is your reaction to the way she “handles” these
situations?
By the end of the play, Nora has transformed.
o What is the outcome of Nora’s transformation?
o Do you think she is a stronger person based on her decision to break with what is
expected of her?
o How do you feel about the idea of “Happiness doesn’t matter. All that matters is the
appearance” as it applies to Torvald and his sudden change in attitude once the
scandal is past- is he really a changed man too?

Paper 5(900 words):
Welcome to the Last Week. After spending all this time on looking at Fiction, Poetry,
Drama, the elements of these forms, some famous works, and shaping your brains to connect
your thoughts to all these ideas, AND THEN sharing these ideas through summary, response,
and analysis, you are ready for the final task. Congratulation!
Literary Analysis- An essay that looks at an element or elements of a literary work,
attempting to explain how these elements in the work relate, define, or explore a theme or
concept. Literary Analysis may look at techniques, language usage, literary conventions, or a
wide variety of various types of analysis styles and perspectives.
The ability to analyze a work draws forth the intentions of the author, the purposes of the
piece, and the greater connection to the audience. Developing this skill allows the reader to be
more critical of the content and quality of media and communications.
Assignment: Write a paper that is 3-5 pages in length (900-1500 words) that focuses on one
aspect of a writing we have read for class. This focus should be on one idea, theme, issue,
character development, plot technique, etc. This is your thought about a writing. You are
presenting your idea, and presenting the evidence to show why your idea is “true”. This is an
argument format-This is NOT a summary or merely your response to a writing. Assume that
your reader has read the piece and understands it.
Writing the assignment: Mention the author and title clearly in your lead-in. Your
introduction should include your thesis statement- what is it you think about that writing.
The body of the paper will support your thesis statement and use cited supporting details
from the work (just like in all your other writings). You may also include support from
outside sources, but you must clearly cite the sources. Be sure to include a conclusion that
restates your thesis and your main ideas- wrap it up, bring it home. All papers have citation
pages as well.
Sample Thesis Statements:
(You choose your own focus; these are just examples pulled from past 206 Literature papers).
On plot: Although Battle Royale by Ralph Ellison is viewed as a cautionary tale
demonstrating the painful consequences of racial prejudice, the central action of the story
draws attention to other elements, such as the author’s attempt to free himself from a “selfimposed” curse.
On setting: The descriptions and details of A&P help bring life to the store in which the
story is set, giving the characters greater areas to act and reflect on.
On character: The main character of the Lawyer in Bartleby the Scrivner is sometimes
described as a mirror image of Bartleby, who acts out the Lawyer’s desires.

paper using the latest Modern Language Association format. See the grade rubric for a point
breakdown. The essay must meet the following requirements:
