ePortfolio Introduction Draft
Writing is one of the essential communication skills that professionals from all areas of
life must possess and maintain a level of proficiency that is critical to the delivery of their jobs.
While most people consider their written communication abilities as above average, their skills
level is usually lower when they are subjected to the scrutiny of the standards of academic
writing. It is the perspective that informed the assessment of my growth and development as an
academic researcher and writers who intends to synthesize information on various subjects and
topics into policy documents that are used for addressing multiple social and human
development challenges. Therefore, my reflection on the crucial moments on this course showed
that the Historical Conversation Project and Advocacy Project are the most significant ones
because they allowed me to develop my research, critical thinking, and writing skills. The
projects also served as the instruments for applying the lessons and knowledge that were
acquired during the class discussions, review of the feedback and comments, and the concepts
and ideas from the assigned readings.
The capacity to synthesize research information into a well-written material that
contributes to the understanding of the target audience on a topic or subject is considered as the
most significant development that occurred during my participation in this writing 39c. First, the
assignment on the historical causes of youth homelessness in San Francisco contained
requirements that allowed me to explore the topic from different dimensions, which improved
my research skills. In this context, the research did not just entail the search for relevant
information but ensuring that they are current, reliable and accurate one of the historical trends of
the causes of youth homelessness in the city. Secondly, the completion of the assignment
required the synthesis of information in ways that connected the systemic institutional failures
that were responsible for the problem with the impacts on the sample population for the project.
Thirdly, the need to maintain the mechanical flow and organizational structure of the essay
improve my critical thinking skills, especially when the information from the sources are needed
to provide evidence to support the historical causes of homelessness in San Francisco. Therefore,
the completion of the historical origins of youth homelessness assignment laid the foundation for
the improvements that occurred in my writing capabilities and research skills.
Furthermore, the need for social scientist to contribute to the solutions for some of the
issues that affect us today served as the avenue for me to strengthen my technical writing
competencies and apply some of the lessons learned in class. The requirements for the advocacy
paper on youth homelessness in San Francisco include the presentation of solutions to the social
issue through the examination of the factors that were responsible for the failure of past efforts to
solve the problem. In this regard, I realized that the capacity to develop a thesis statement that
illustrates the position of the author on a subject was useful to the formulation of the solutions
that drive the advocacy efforts of the organization. Also, the synthesis of information on the ideal
measures for dealing with the high prevalence of youth homeless in the city was different from
the previous assignment because of the need to use the failures of the past and current solutions
to create the ones for the future. For example, the recommended coordinated program consists of
improved components of government policies such as the effective use of data on the needs of
homeless youths in the city.
Meanwhile, the chapters from the assigned reading, City of Segregation contributed to
some of the developments of my written communication and research competencies because of
the ideas and concepts that were discussed during the class sessions. Chapter one was the most
exciting and valuable to the development of the ideas that were used to complete the HCP
assignment because of its discussion on the role of segregation on the high incidence of the
housing crisis that increased the rate of homelessness in the United States. Also, it laid the
foundation for gaining insights into the concepts and topics that were discussed in chapters two
and three including the spatial segregation of towns and the efforts of the people to fight
discrimination through the courts. These readings that exposed to the core issues that created the
housing crisis in most major cities in the United States and made the information that was shared
in the “there goes the neighborhood podcast” understandable and relevant to the research paper.
Hence, the first three chapters of the city of segregation provided the knowledge that assisted me
in creating the framework that was used to identify the issues and solutions to youth
homelessness in San Francisco.
In conclusion, my development as an academic researcher and writer who possesses the
capacity to analyze issues and use the knowledge to develop solutions to them became possible
through the completion of the advocacy and historical causes paper on youth homelessness in
San Francisco. Aside from their role in the development of the solutions to the problems, these
papers allowed me to explore all origin of the problem, synthesize the information, and apply my
improved critical thinking skills to the evaluation of the most relevant policy for ending the
issue. Also, these papers enabled me to learn the methods for reviewing and editing my written
communication materials according to the standards of writing, which required the effective use
of organization and arrangement of ideas and points. Finally, the course strengthened my ability
to source information and applying them to justify my position on a subject.
