Thesis: Mediocrity is a common factor for all human beings, and exceptionality is not as
exceptional as many people think.
Topic: Mediocrity as Part of Human Nature.
Evaluation of Position on the Topic: My position on the topic is that mediocrity is a normal
part of human existence. According to the criteria, my view on the subject is adequately
supported. It is indeed accurate to state that not every human being can excel in every aspect of
their life. People are excellent in some elements, but they fail in some other vital factors of life.
For example, someone might be hugely successful in business, but they may be mediocre in
forming human connections and relationships.
Key Categories for Judging the Topic
Body Paragraph One: Mediocrity is standard and exceptionality involves sacrifice
➢ Exceptionality involves the sacrifice of a normal life.
➢ Being average is a normal thing for the vast majority of the human race.
➢ Being great is common for a few individuals.
Quote: If someone desires to live a great life, then they are forced to neglect or give up the
factors that constitute a normal life (https://medium.com/the-mission/the-world-caters-toaverage-people-and-mediocre-lifestyles-c10902476843).
Body Paragraph Two: Excellent and exceptional people have some degree of
mediocrity
➢ There are successful people in life who have a lot of money but make common mistakes.
➢ Human beings define mediocrity in the wrong way.
➢ Mediocrity is equated to a lack of success, which is wrong. Successful people are also
mediocre.
Quote: Excellence is equated to the accomplishment of goals while being average is equivalent
to lack of achievement. But does life work like that? (https://umairhaque.com/why-mediocrityand-excellence-arent-what-we-think-they-are-68beba01fcb6)
Body Paragraph Three: Society and media promote the notion that mediocrity is
terrible and abnormal.
➢ Media equates success to accomplishments such as wealth.
➢ Everybody is led to believe that they will grow to be successful since accomplishment is
part of normal life.
➢ People who fail in life view themselves as abnormal.
Quote: The people have been influenced by television to think that they will grow to become
millionaires, famous movie actors, or rock stars. However, that is not the case
(https://yanngirard.typepad.com/yanns_blog/2014/11/a-mediocre-life.html).
Conclusion
The fact that I agree with my topic has great significance to the audience. This is because
accepting the topic as an accurate statement reveals the true nature of human beings. To an
extent, it signifies the change that we would like to see in society. This alteration involves
accepting people have an aspect of being average in one thing or another. This is instrumental in
helping the human race know that they should not be quick to judge mediocre since it is a normal
part of human life.

Mediocrity as Part of Human Nature
What is the gap between mediocrity and exceptionality? The answer viewed from a
philosophical approach is “nothing”. The fact that everyone has both the senses of mediocrity and
exceptionality nullifies the rift between the two diverse human categories. People understanding
of the concepts of mediocrity and exceptionality has been widely influenced by the television
where people regard celebrities and the rich as exceptional and themselves serving the role of
societal mediocrity. However, mediocrity has a broader foundation and an extent beyond what
people perceive it to be. Thesis: Mediocrity is a common factor for all human beings, and
exceptionality is not as exceptional as many people think.
My position on the topic is that mediocrity is a normal part of human existence. According
to the criteria, my view on the subject is adequately supported. It is indeed accurate to state that
not every human being can excel in every aspect of their life. People are excellent in some
elements, but they fail in some other vital factors of life. For example, someone might be hugely
successful in business, but they may be mediocre in forming human connections and relationships.
So is the reason why mediocrity should not be scrutinized as an abnormal status in a person.
Mediocrity is understood as a uniform way of living or doing things on a certain standard.
To become exceptional in ways of doing things, one is expected to sacrifice the easy standard ways
of how things get done. They should be risky enough to instigate their own special methodology
of doing things. As such, they would attain a certain degree of exceptionality. In the instance, an
individual step outside their comfort zones, away from the standardized normal way of doing
things. They stand at a high potential to achieve more than a normal person can perceive. By doing
so, they end up attaining a high degree of exceptionality among others who still follow the
conventional way of doing things. For the vast and common majority of people, mediocrity is seen
and indeed is a normal phenomenon. This aspect can be seen in the normal society where people.
They conduct their activities based on normal functionality leaving out just a limited number of
individuals who have mastered the capabilities of handling issues and tasks differently and in most
cases, out of their common comfort zones.
Not everyone was made for excellence and exceptionality. This claim can be verified
according to the criterion of body fitness. In a society, maybe a school containing diverse
personalities, it can be observed that majority of persons in the society are in the brackets of the
commoners where their body fitness is in a way less than ideal. The lower numbers in the same
school comprise of fit individuals beyond the branding of obese. This example proves that in a
society, only but a few are designated for a certain criterion of exceptionality. The statuses of
being mediocre and exceptional are not fixed on their respective personalities. They can be
changed at the will of the beholder the moment they decide to work beyond their comforts to
attaining their desired body physique.
Funny enough, the individuals so regarded by others and themselves never lack a taint in
their “exceptionality”. If a proper scan is done in their lives, there would be stains of mediocrity
in other areas except for the one or several areas they are seen to excel and vice versa for the
common mediocre. As a matter of fact, this point would prove that the status of exceptionality
can only be viewed from one angle. As such, one person’s exceptionality is another’s mediocrity
and when there is a flip on different plays of life, the mediocre man becomes exceptional while
the exceptional turns mediocre (Haque 2).
Many people have projected mediocrity as the deficiency of success in their endeavors.
The incorrect factor in this assumption is analyzing exceptionality with success. There are some
people, successful in wealthy possessions but still inhibit some degree of mediocrity altogether.
Their affluence is not a limiting factor to their degree of mediocrity since these persons may be
poor in other social aspects such as their relationships to their families. Looking at things from
that perspective can also term these predefined exceptional people as mediocre. This is the same
format people have used to define mediocrity – lack of prosperity in their careers. However, this
has been proven wrong by the layman’s supposition that “no one is perfect”. Everyone has their
strongholds (brilliance) while at the same time are mediocre considering a different field (Haque
1).
Quote: “Excellence is equated to the accomplishment of goals while being average is equivalent
to lack of achievement. But does life work like that?” (Haque, Umair 4)
The entire media, the television and all its contents including the news together with the
society have crafted the notion in individuals that condition of mediocrity is a terrible and an
abnormal phenomenon in people. The media is prone to relating personal success to be wealth
accomplishments and a sense of influence. However, this is wrong. Personal accomplishments
cannot be related to how much wealth one has gathered. It makes more sense to relate
exceptionality to being best at what someone does than the amount of wealth they own (Yann 1).
As the television is seen as a personality builder, many individuals have grasped the
notion from it that, affluence is directly related to exceptionality. As such, it tends to let people
believe that a normal life is characterized by affluence and therefore regard lacking wealth as an
abnormal status. From these assumptions, many have adopted the irrational thinking that they
will gain enough wealth to step out of mediocrity as presumed by the television. People have
been directed to follow the notion that they can achieve success and happiness on a short span of
time. A lie told to sell dreams as Yann explains it. Prospectively, the television has taken the vote
that without money and wealth, a person is then living an abnormal life so to say. This gives an
entirely different meaning to what success, happiness and exceptionality have fundamentally.
What really is the true definition of success and exceptionality?
The status of affluence does not really mean to be successful or exceptional as hinted by
televisions and the media. Exceptionality, happiness, and success are gained from personal
indulgent into a certain phenomenon in life. To elaborate on this, consider an example of a
proficient artist who has not yet been recognized by society. As such, this artist does not sell his
artistry to anyone but curves them for the satisfaction of their production. This person can be
termed as happy due to the satisfaction gained from his artistry. He is successful since he
perceives himself as capable. He is also exceptional from any other person in society for his
uncommon characteristics. He is not wealthy but at the same time cannot be termed as mediocre.
Mediocrity and exceptionalism have no standard measure and cannot be confirmed in any
person.
Quote: “The people have been influenced by television to think that they will grow to become
millionaires, famous movie actors, or rock stars. However, that is not the case” (Yann Girard 1).
The fact that I agree with my topic has great significance to the audience. This is because
accepting the topic as an accurate statement reveals the true nature of human beings. To an
extent, it signifies the change that we would like to see in society. This alteration involves
accepting people have an aspect of being average in one thing or another. Altogether, it helps in
declaring that affluence and fame are not the frameworks to base between mediocrity and
exceptionalism. This is instrumental in helping the human race to know and understand that they
should not be quick to judge mediocre since it is a normal part of human life and a must have for
all in the society, the affluent and the so-called average.
