Kowalski, Robin M. “Cyber-bullying.” Psychiatric Times. 25.11 (2008). Print.
Kowalski hopes to establish what cyber-bullying is and its prevalence in regards to
adolescents and high school students. In this article, the author explains that people think
bullying to be physical and verbal, but the new form of bullying which is cyber-bullying has
become a very big issue in society. The author argues that the main reason as to why cyberbullying is so dangerous is the fact that unlike traditional bullying this type of bullying allows
the aggressors anonymity. In regards to anonymity, the author argues that due to the fact that
these attacks happen online through electronic devices they allow people to hide behind their
fake online profiles when facilitating their attacks. The author explains that it is hard to
estimate or even evaluate the characteristics of online bullies since they are unidentified in
most cases. This makes it harder to do in-depth research on the issue. While it is easy to
collect statistics on the issue, to understand what propels it and how to ensure that it does not
happen has proven hard. Kowalski explains that this form of online social cruelty has been
popularized by the communication patterns among teenagers. While even adults are subjected
to cyber-bullying, these incidents are most prevalent with the youths. This is because young
people are the greatest users of the internet and they spend most of their time on online
platforms. This makes it easier for them to be bullied. In expressing how this form of bullying
is similar to traditional bullying, the author argues that there is a power imbalance between
the victims and the perpetrator in both forms of bullying. In cyber-bullying, the perpetrator
Ding 2
has power over the victim mostly because they possess some information that would damage
the victim’s reputation if it was exposed.
Jose, Paul E, Moja Kljakovic, Emma Scheib, and Olivia Notter. “The Joint Development of
Traditional Bullying and Victimization with Cyber-bullying and Victimization in
Adolescence.” Journal of Research on Adolescence. 22.2 (2012): 301-309. Print.
Jose et al.explains the interrelationship between traditional bullying and cyberbullying and the interrelation between the two types of victimhood. In his evaluation, the
author differentiates the types of bullying by the platforms that they occur through where
traditional bullying occurs face to face while cyber-bullying occurs through electronic
devices giving it a more impersonal character. While this is the case, the author explains that
the two forms of bullying have similar characteristics of wanting to exercise malicious power
over the victim. The type of powers held by the two types of bullying is similar since they
seek to humiliate the victim and destroy their reputation and self-esteem. In regards to
victimhood, we realize that the two types of victimhood have similarities and differences s
well. One of the similarity is that the victimhood affects the self-esteem of a person. They,
therefore, cause the victims to feel inferior and ashamed leaving them feeling miserable. The
differences include the fact that cyber victimhood has greater potential for date due to the fact
that online social platforms offer a large audience. This means that this type of bullying can
affect the victim greatly due to the number of criticism that online media can present. The
traditional victimhood involves a smaller number of audience hence not as potent as cyber
victimhood.

(2013): 139-151. Print.
The author explains cyber-bullying as a new trend in bullying. The author also
explains how fast this type of bullying his growing, especially over the last few decades. In
this article, the author seeks to understand the view of adolescents in the matter of cyberbullying in order to have their perspective. The main reason for focusing on adolescents is
due to the fact that they are the most affected party when it comes to cyber-bullying. Due to
the high prevalence of cyber-bullying attacks on adolescent, studies have increased in hoping
to understand the relationship of the type of bullying and the youths in relations to effects and
causes. The author seeks to explain the approach of adolescents on the matter. This study
shows that most adolescents are aware of what cyber-bullying is but most of them do not
understand how this form of crime can be reported or punished. This shows that most
adolescents who have experienced some form of bullying would not know how to report or
handle the matter.

Department Visits for Mental Health Crisis: Prevalence of Cyber-Bullying in Suicidal
Youth.” Child & Adolescent Social Work Journal. 33.5 (2016): 469-472. Print.
Nasreen et al. hope to establish the relationship between cyber-bullying and suicide in
victims. The author evaluated the differences between traditional bullying and cyber-bullying
where she explains that the differences in behavioral tendencies of victims can be seen. In
this explanation, the author shows that there is a prevalence in suicidal tendencies for victims
who experience cyber-bullying than those who experience traditional bullying. In this
evaluation, a gender difference was also examined where female cyber-bullying victims were
Ding 4
seen to have more suicidal tendencies than their male counterparts. Other behavioral
differences in traditional and cyber-bullying were drug abuse. Substance abuse was more
prevalent in the victims of cyber-bullying than it was on ts victims of traditional bullying.
Victims of cyber-bullying were also more likely to experience sexual abuse as well as
physical abuse as compared to those of traditional bullying. The author hopes to establish that
the consequences of cyber-bullying are more profound when compared to those of traditional
bullying emphasizing on how dangerous this type of bullying is. This means that the
psychological effects of this type of bullying are higher than in other forms of bullying; hence
more attention must be placed on it.
Stuckey, Rachel. Cyber-bullying. Crabtree Publishing Company.
Stuckey in her books seeks to explain how the social network has its advantages and
disadvantages. The author also explains the different ways in which social networks are being
used to cause harm where she explains different situations of cyber-bullying. In this book,
Stuckey hopes that by explaining the different situations of cyber-bullying she can influence
her readers into taking the moral paths. Cyber-bullying according to Stuckey does not only
happen to teenagers, but it also happens to adults and has the potential of affecting many
people including large organizations. Cyber-bullying can be used to facilitate crimes where
even employees in an organization are bullied or rather blackmailed to do something that can
harm their organization. Cases of cyber-bullying have affected personal lives in many ways
as the author explains that social networks are both advantageous and harmful. In this case,
she explains that social networks do a great job in enhancing connectivity where people can
reach their friends and family from all over the world electronically. While this may be a
great way of communication, it can expose a person’s life greatly where their personal
information could be acquired and used maliciously to attack them. This leads to a lot of
Ding 5
issues for the victim including depression, self-harm or low self-image and esteem and even
leads to suicides.
Disturbing statistics unveiled; Cyber-bullying is a problem that needs to be urgently

Daily News South Africa explains that recent statistics have shown an alarming level
of cyber-bullying in South Africa. The author explains that in research done by Ipsos in 2018,
South Africa was ranked the country with the highest amount of cyber-bullying. In the article,
the author explains a recent cyber-bullying incident where a 13 years old student in Pretoria
commuted suicide due to cyber-bullying. This shows that cyber-bullying is most prevalent in
adolescent and the youths. In this incident, the author explains the power imbalance in this
situation where the perpetrator of the attack who was also a student had threatened to post a
video of the victim naked on social media. The investigation into the case also exposed that
before that victim committed suicide, they had been bullied for a week. The author also
explains that some of the measures that have been taken in South Africa in regards to cyberbullying have included cyber-bullying insurance. A company named First for Women
developed their first insurance cover for cyber-bullying citing the need for financial and legal
support for cyber-bullying. The author explains some of the ways that parents can tell their
children’s are experiencing cyber-bullying. Some of the signs to be wary of include children
appearing edgy, nervous and easily irritable. Children would also show signs of depression
and being overly secretive. Other signs include avoiding online activities and being worried
after being online. Children may also stop using their devices completely or even begin to
Ding 6
avoid going to school. They might also avoid being with a friend and become disengaged in
activities. When parents see such signs, they must take fast action to evaluate the problem
before the bullying becomes extremely dangerous to the victim.
Damanjit Sandhu and Shubhdip Kaur. Reducing Cyber-bullying and Problem Behaviors
among Students through Parental Group Therapy. Pakistan Journal of Psychological
Research, December 31, 2016, Saturday.

Damajit and Shubhdip explain in their study the psychological problems that cyberbullying g brings about. The author seeks to demonstrate that even though cyber-bullying
may not see as aggressive and as potentially harmful as traditional bullying, the psychological
effects are just as damaging if not worse. Cyber-bullying is explained as the type of bullying
that occurs electronically through the use of social platforms. Bullying has been seen to be
most prevalent in young people, and adolescent students are the most highly affected. The
author explains that most students that experience cyber-bullying do not always report it and
the study showed that when given a platform to express the issue of bullying students reveal
that in one way or another, they have experienced cyber-bullying. This helps to explain that
students need to have open and easily accessible platforms to report cyber-bullying in order
to have a better plan at eradicating this type of aggression. The author also evaluates the
behavioral patterns of victims of cyber-bullying where they explain that these victims show
more behavioral problems than those who have not been bullied. This establishes the effect
that cyber-bullying has on adolescents. The author recommends the best therapy for dealing
with this issue to be the Parent Group Therapy that has shown great effects in dealing with
Ding 7
behavioral issues of victims. This therapy is very effective due to the parental support offered
by aren’t s to their children.
Wang, Jing, Ronald J. Iannotti, and Jeremy W. Luk. “Patterns of adolescent bullying
behaviors: Physical, verbal, exclusion, rumor, and cyber.” Journal of school psychology 50.4
(2012): 521-534.
Wang explains cyber-bullying to be a form of harassment that happens on online
platforms such as social media and even on digital devices such as cell phones through text
messages. Cyber-bullying is perpetrated through texts, apps, social media, forums, SMS, and
even in gaming. This type of harassment has become increasingly popular especially to
teenagers who are the most users of these platforms. This harassment has become so
prevalent that it has warranted legal actions. The author explains that some of the examples of
cyber-bullying can fall into the category of stalking, defamation, and sexual harassment.
Posting rumors or false information about a person is seen as defamation, posting sexual
content to someone against their will can turn into sexual harassment while cyberstalking can
also earn a person jail time. Wang concludes that technology has also presented a platform
for harassment and bullying. While this is the case, law enforcement has made sure to make
people accountable for this type of cyber-bullying. According to the author, one of the
challenges that people get when prosecuting these claims may be identifying the real identity
of the harasser as people partake alias on the internet.
