about the “NINA” signs; even if this was a myth, which most historians suggest, why is this
significant with regard to the assimilation and treatment of Irish immigrants? This was actually
a song, but was there other evidence of overt discrimination against Irish immigrants during the
1850s? I think you ask three very comprehensive research questions; remember to keep in mind
the context of the antebellum period with regard to how many Irish immigrants not only were
serving in the Union army, but also competing with free blacks for jobs in the civilian
