The aim of image 1 is to create awareness of the areas that the Bureau of Consumer
Protection deal with in an attempt to protect consumers. From image 1, it is clear that the Bureau
of Consumer Protection has six main divisions (Federal Trade Commission). The picture shows
that the Bureau’s main aim is to protect consumers of all demographic groups. The use of an
umbrella that is captioned consumer protection signifies the protection role of the board tom
consumers. In image 1, the stakeholder uses logos by stating the divisions of the Bureau which
can easily be referenced. The use of an umbrella also points to the use of logos since people
know that umbrellas are meant for consumer protection. The consumers being protected in the
image represent an American family. By using a family, the stakeholder directly points to the
basic unit of American life and therefore the feeling of a need for consumer protection. Ethos,
like logos is also used through the enumeration of the six divisions of the bureau. The image
demonstrates an appeal to timeliness by indicating the presence of vulnerable demographic
groups among the consumers that need protections. The demographic groups include children
and the elderly that form a significant proportion of the American population and who need
protection from deceptive practices and exploitation.
On the other hand, the goal of image 2 is to convey the message that hybrid cars are
expensive to maintain. From image 2, it is clear that the car has a breakdown. The owner has no
immediate help and is reading what can be assumed to be the manual of the car. He is also
making a call which gives the indication that the manufacturer is giving instructions to
troubleshoot the problem since it is not easy to get a mechanic to fix the problem. The use of
logic is demonstrated by showing that the car has a breakdown and needs repair; the bonnet has
been opened to check for the problem. The fact that no one is around to offer help and that the
owner has to make a distant call and verify from a manual also indicates to the use of logic in the

image. The fact that the owner is seated alone on the road and seeking far away help appeals to
the emotion of helplessness and distress that a person gets when a hybrid vehicles breaks down.
Ethos is demonstrated by showing a valid number plate and a known brand – Ford – which
manufactures hybrid cars. An appeal to timeliness is demonstrated by showcasing a hybrid car
that has undergone a break down.
