Journal: Importance of Analysis
The story of “Mother Tongue” offers excellent insight into the shame and
confidence to both children of immigrants who might feel uncomfortable with their poor
English and people who think that their English is not proficient. One of the most
significant challenges immigrants face is the language barrier. People whose English is
not well developed are likely to feel shame and embarrassment. They might have
trouble communicating at work or when having to interact with others. This can be
problematic in achieving daily needs and lead to a feeling of shame or incompetence.
They may avoid communication with others to avoid being perceived as less intelligent
or unsophisticated. Tan’s story exposes these feelings and urges them to be
courageous and learn from her and her mother’s experiences.
I think that it is essential to have a comprehensive analysis of this article to
enable other readers to understand the message in a better and more straightforward
manner. Different readers get different ideas from the same message because different
people interpret and understand readings differently. I believe that she did a superb job
discussing her life story and her relationship with her mother and the challenges she
endured when communicating in English. Therefore, having a clear and precise
analysis of this article, the audience will be able to understand the need to continue
practicing, asking for help and always being positive when being faced with challenges.
One should believe that it is possible to learn any language if they commit themselves,
but also be understanding of others who don’t.
I believe that my goal in analyzing “Mother Tongue” is to explain stylistic devices
used by the author to express herself in the essay. I also believe that the purpose of

the essay is every type of English is correct and there is no accurate category of
English. Tan suggests that many individuals are narrow-minded and have
misconceived views
of others regarding culture and language background.
Considering this, I will use by essay to help my audience develop an understanding of
the importance of the author’s goal which is to show the challenges people raised by
parents that speak “limited” English face.

I believe that my goal in analyzing ‘Mother Tongue by Amy Tan is to explain stylistic
devices used by Tan to express herself in the essay. Tan uses various parallel structures
frequently throughout the piece (Tan 3). Tan implies that even though her mother’s English may
be imperfect, in her view that does not foray her as being erroneous in any way. Besides, I also
believe that the purpose of the essay is every type of English is correct, and there is no accurate
category of English. She also stresses that English exists in countless procedures that means that
there should make no discriminations (Tan 3). Tan brings this meaning by hitting more emphasis
on the words “English” throughout the text. In so doing Tan suggests that many individuals are
narrow-minded and misconceive views of others regarding culture and language background.
Considering this, I will use my essay to help my audience develop an understanding of the
importance of the author’s goal which is to show the challenges people raised by parents that
speak “limited English” as Tan’s mother (Tan 3). It leads to people being judged poorly in
society by others.

Mother Tongue by Amy Tan
Mother Tongue by Amy Tan brings out the challenges of lacking enough mastery of
English. The author brings to light how other people can judge a person speaking poor
English unwell. Tan notes that her mother spoke a sub-standard English, which caused was a
significant factor that determined how people judge her. Tan’s mother was her primary
caregiver and became an essential part of her upbringing. Tan central message is that
language is a necessary tool for not only communication but also a way of measuring the
value and worth of a person.
The story by Tan offers excellent insight into shame and confidence to both children
of immigrants who might feel uncomfortable with their poor English and people who think
that their English is not proficient. One of the most significant challenges immigrants face is
the language barrier. To survive and eke a living in a new world, they must understand and
practice the language and use it with proficiency. They might realize that the English they
grew up using are far less sophisticated than the English they are supposed to possess. This is
especially the case if the parents used poor English when they were growing up. This can
cause embarrassment and deprive children of immigrant confidence to speak English with
other people. Tan’s story exposes this feeling of shame and a lack of confidence that
immigrant children might experience. She urges them to be courageous and borrow a leaf
from her relationship with her mother who had poor English. She notes that childhood
English creates an emotional bond between the child and the parent, and should not be a
cause of shame.
People whose English is not well developed are also likely to feel shame and
embarrassed when using the language with other people. They might have trouble
communicating at the workplace and other places when they interact with people whose

English is proficient. This can be problematic in achieving daily needs and in the worst case,
lead to a feeling of shame and incompetence. These people may avoid communicating with
other people to avoid being perceived as less intelligent and less worth. This can be explained
by the fact that people tend to judge and perceive people who speak or write bad English as
less knowledgeable and unsophisticated.
In the Mother Tongue, Tan talks to people with poor English and reminds them that it
is common for language to be used as a tool for judging the worth of an individual. This is the
same thing that happened to the mother of the author, whose English was not well developed.
However, this did not stop Tan’s mother form achieving her goals in life. She was a
determined reader and achieved financial success because of reading Wall Street journals and
Forbes. Tans mother was a commercial success and socially abled that she had more status in
the society that a gangster wanted to join her family to enjoy the privileges of such rank. To
the people who fear that their English is terrible, the success of Tan’s mother demonstrates
that having little mastery of language should not be the reason to sink low in life.
