GROUP BOOK REPORT ASSIGNMENT
Part 2
You are assigned to a group in which one person has read each one of the four books from the
individual report. With your group, develop answers to the following questions and provide in
a short report. Your report should read as a SINGLE report, NOT as a combination of reports
from different people. You will have to work together to develop a consistent format and
voice for the final submission.
The Group book report Assignment is due on Monday 03/18.
You will need to turn in the group book report in both as hard copy as well as uploaded to
Turnitin (so mandatory in both ways) ! Failing to do one or the other is an automatic Fail. The
Turnitin will be accessible starting Monday 03/11 at 08:00 pm and will close on Monody 03/18
at 10:00am.
Please bring your hard copy to call to hand in at the end of the class.
1. Summarize, in a total of no more than one page, the (key) structures described in the
four books. Summarize a comparison of the structures by completing the following
table. This table should be included in the report. Highlight important similarities and
differences in text that accompanies and references this table.
Location of
Structure (s)
Time Period of
Construction,
Performance
Approx. Cost
Materials of
Construction
2. Compare and contrast the functional characteristics of the structures (their technical
function, what they are for, how they were made, the construction process) described in
the books. What, if anything, does this process tell you about advances in technology
over the time period covered?
3. Compare and contrast the cultural implications of these structures. In particular, try to
use these four cases to make the argument that the cultural impact of an addition or
subtraction from the built environment is (is not) related to the COST of that project.
4. Compare and contrast the sustainability of these structures. Are any of them more
environmentally benign? Did any improve their environments? Did they improve the
social systems in which they operated? (be specific, and argue from evidence)

5. Consider the impact of the passage of time on our ability to build meaningful and
important projects. The four cases that you are considering cover a very wide range in
time. Over that time, has our ability to conduct project change? Are there things we do
better now? Worse? Has our acceptance of the built environment or our understanding
of how it is provided changed? Use these four cases to provide SPECIFIC arguments,
and bolster as you see needed with additional research on other projects.
NOTES ON GROUP FUNCTION:
The KEY recognition that leads to group success is that this is a GROUP REPORT that ANSWERS the
questions. You should organize your thoughts by the point you want to make, and NOT by the book from
which they come. Doing the former, you will have points with the structures you have studied as examples
to reinforce those points. Doing the latter, you will have information on the four projects, but you will be
leaving it to the reader to do the work you were supposed to do.
NOTES ON GROUP DELIVERABLES AND FUNCTION:
Your group will have the following deliverables:
1. Your plan should list specific assignments for individual members of the group. For each
section, you should have one or two people responsible for drafting the section, and one or two
responsible for reviewing. Each person MUST have sole responsibility for reviewing or
drafting at least one section, and no person may participate in both parts for a single section.
2. THE FINAL REPORT will be due AT THE END OF CLASS on MONDAY 03/18. I expect
a professional report in the range of 7 to 10 pages. If I suspect that your report does not
represent all members, it will be considered an automatic fail.
3. A SURVEY in the from of frontal presentation of your group will be conducted at the end of
the process. The survey will take place in class and will be mandatory (date to be announced).
Grades will be assigned based on a combination of the group performance and the balance of
the group’s assessment of your individual performance. Part of the survey may include
questions regarding your personal familiarity with ALL aspects of the group’s conclusions. No
grade will be assigned to the members of the group until all surveys completed.
