Coursework 2 Structure
Discuss a recent ‘iconic’ construction project – built in the last ten years or currently
progressing at site – 6000 word report
Generic structure for your report. (sections and subsections should be included)
• Chapter 1: Task 1-Introduction to the project, justification of its iconic nature and
description of relevant project information.
• Chapter 2: Task 2 – Describe and map the main processes and sub-processes in the
pre-construction stage by using four IDEFO diagrams, two UML Activity diagrams
and appropriate textual descriptions for each diagram. Description/discussion
should be supported by relevant cited references (see assignment brief)
• Chapter 3: Task 3 – Use a “risk register” and associated matrices to perform a risk
analysis of the main processes during the pre-construction stage. Fifteen/twenty
items should be taken to the register to be discussed and justified based on their
possible impact and likelihood of the impact. The risk analysis should also be
discussed with cited references (see assignment brief)
• Chapter 4: Conclusion
• Reference List (references according to the APA 6 Harvard format)
• Appendices (if any)

construction, the overall context and the nature of the chosen iconic
project. You may also make appropriate assumptions as necessary and
state them accordingly.
• The risk analysis should also be discussed with cited references and
references to the risk register constructed within this study.

Assessment task details and instructions
Working individually, you are required to select and investigate a recent ‘iconic’ construction
project completed in the last ten years or currently progressing at site. The project could be
located in any part of the world. You can select the project discussed in Assignment 1 or a
different project.
Considering your selected iconic project, you should write a report covering the following three
tasks:
TASKS
1. Briefly introduce your selected project. The selected project should be named and a
brief background should be provided to introduce/describe the chosen project and to
justify its iconic nature. Relevant dates and project information should be clearly
specified by including relevant tables/figures.
2. Describe and map, by using four IDEFO diagrams, the main processes in pre-construction
stage (i.e. all the key processes preceding the construction stage) of the selected project.
The four IDEF0 diagrams should consist of a single Level 0 diagram (i.e. Context diagram),
a single Level 1 diagram and two Level 2 diagrams. You should also select two
subprocesses, from your Level 2 IDEF0 diagrams, and describe the flow of activities within
these subprocesses by using two UML Activity diagrams. Each diagram should be
introduced and discussed in the report by clearly describing the processes/subprocesses
depicted in the diagram in the context of the selected project. The description of the
illustrated processes and subprocesses is expected to be effectively supported by
references to relevant literature and theory. You should also make appropriate
assumptions as necessary and state them accordingly
3. Use a “risk register” and associated matrices to perform a risk analysis of the main
processes during the pre-construction stage of the chosen iconic project. The risk analysis
should also be discussed with cited references and references to the risk register
constructed within this study. An indicative number of risk issues (perhaps 15 – 20) should
be entered in the risk register and their choice justified. These risk events or risk issues
should be prioritised based on their possible impact / and likelihood of the impact in line
with the stakeholder requirements, technologies and methods of construction, the overall
context and the nature of the chosen iconic project. You may also make appropriate
assumptions as necessary and state them accordingly.
FORMAT
Students shall work individually to produce individual Microsoft Word or PDF reports. All
submissions should have a cover sheet (identifying the module, the date, the student’s name and
roll number, and the total number of words included in the main body of the report) and should
be clearly structured by using relevant chapters and sections. A table of contents and a reference
list should be included.
Assessment Information/Brief
1
In-text citations and the APA 6th (Harvard) Style of referencing must be used (see guidance on
blackboard). The main emphasis in referencing should be on good quality reference material such
as reports, articles in journal/conference and relevant textbooks or websites.
Assessed intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this assessment, you will be able to:
Knowledge and Understanding
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of process thinking
2. Evaluate alternative planning/modelling tools
3. Critically analyse construction processes in projects and determine appropriateness of process
developments/improvement approaches
Practical, Professional or Subject Specific Skills
1. Use different process modelling tools/techniques
2. Develop construction process/performance improvement frameworks for appropriate circumstances
3. Undertake risk and value evaluations
Transferable Skills and other Attributes
1. Time management and personal organizational skills
2. Ability to research, analyse and critically evaluate information
3. Prepare written reports for senior management consideration
Module Aims
The aim of the module is to develop knowledge and understanding of process thinking in the
management of projects.
Word count/ duration (if applicable)
Your assessment should be a Microsoft Word/PDF report of maximum 6000 words. Cover sheet,
table of contents, reference list, bibliography (optional) and appendices (optional) are not
considered in the word count. Students are expected to decide for themselves the appropriate
word length of each chapter by considering the assessment criteria specified in this assignment
brief.
If you submit a report which exceeds the maximum number of words stated above the
exceeding words will not be considered in the marking process. However, you may receive
comments on your ability to appropriately summarise information, focusing on relevant issues,
etc.
Please note: whilst no specific penalty is stated it should be noted that marks will reflect the
need for focus and brevity in the work.
