Create a creative short paper title
Topic: The single most significant business risk
Risk Analysis (We only want to define the biggest risk in Mexico is drug
issues or organize crime that will affect our business, and do not put
OTHER risk beside the drug in the essay)
WHAT is the risk (a single greatest obstacle to your business success?)
Describe its various aspects in detail. (eg: Bribery, smuggling)
WHY is this a risk: to you, your project, your product? To understand “their”
reasons, envision and describe them from their side. Why do they do this? (eg:
Why bribe?). There is always more than one reason. Most reasons are based on
national or local history. To answer, therefore, you must learn “something” of the
history of those to whom you hope to market.
WHO: Which specific group(s) is/are most likely to pose this risk? (Eg: Who will
solicit bribes?)
HOW: Often, to understand a problem, you must learn each step of how it works.
What might they actually DO to you, your product, your project? How might they
actually do it? (Eg: How does bribery actually work?)
WHEN/WHERE: Often, to understand a problem, you must identify the times,
places an circumstances in which it occurs. (eg: When and where {Under what
circumstances} must I bribe?)
***Remember:: Do not merely record the risk. Describe how it may harm
you and/or your project.***
B. Your proposal: How to cope
How do YOU propose to cope with the risk you describe? Suggest five steps.
Each step should describe: WHAT you should do, and WHY you should do it.
Interview 1
1. What is your name?
a) Cipriano Perez
2. What was your job in Mexico?
a) I was involved in many occupations, but I studied to become
a forestry engineer and I worked at my father’s bakery.
3. What is your job in U.S? (If available)
a) I currently have my own business, which is a Mexican
bakery.
4. What reason make you to immigrate to United State?
a) The reason that I immigrated to the U.S. was because there
was no opportunities as a forestry engineer in Mexico so I
wanted to see if there were any opportunities in America.
5. What is the most serious problem(risk) that we might need to
face when we do the business in Mexico?
a) In Mexico there are many risks because having a small
business there is common. On the other hand, it’s not
uncommon for drug cartels to be involved in those business
or become involved. Although this isn’t a threat in every city
in Mexico it is still a large risk.
6. Where is the most risk in Mexico?
a) The largest risk in Mexico is the unreliability of safety. You
can never know if it’s an unsafe decision because only the
people that live there are familiar with the processes that
take place. The most risk to do business at geographically
would be cities like Sinaloa, Durango and Michoacán.
7. Can you give some detail or example about this risk?
a) The places I’ve listed are just some the ones that have been
in the news for large amounts of acts of violence, but any
territory can be dangerous. An example of the risks would
that it is widely known that in each town where there are
small business the drug cartels will demand shares of the
profits if they claim to be the owners of that territory.
7.Why does this problem(risk) will affect our business?
It can definitely affect the profits of your company because if you
choose not to associate with them they will retaliate. On the other
hand, if you cooperate then they will just take a part of your profits.
8. How does this problem(risk) affect us?
a) It affects all aspects of your business. From your brand
image to your sales.
9. Is there any advice for us may be can help us with this
problem(risk)?
a) I would recommend that if you choose to do business in
Mexico than you just conduct your manufacturing there
instead of establishing a company there. Before NAFTA
ended companies like American Apparel did their
manufacturing there. You can still manufacture there and it
would be a much safer option than having a business in
Mexico.
10. Do you have any experience deal with this problem(risk)?
a) I don’t have any personal experience with this problem.
Interview 2: (If the answer do not related to the drug issue, do
not put it into the essay)

———————–Corrupt system:
● Some people within the Mexican government have been found guilty of fraud, stealing
government money for their own benefit:
Elba Esther Gordillo, leader of the largest labor union was arrested under the
suspicion of embezzling $200m

● The current President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (known for running
three times for presidency) has taken odd measures to fight the corrupt government
○ Travels without an armed security team believing that “his people” will protect
him
○ Will try to fight corruption on by cutting funding on programs but not all of them
are corrupt. This leads to innocent leaders to not have funding from the
government under the assumption that all programs are corrupt.
■ One that my mother told me about is about a program that supports
woman who have been raped. They support resources and counseling,
many can miss the chance to be supported.
When the government is not using their resources fully, the people cannot get a benefit.
