PHL 111 Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric
Overview: For your final project in this course, you will write a critical essay in which you use critical thinking skills to examine an argument presented in an
article that is associated with your chosen topic. You will examine the argument’s logic, reasoning, bias, and credibility, and then apply the same critical thinking
skills to developing your own alternative argument. You will then reflect on how you can apply this process to other areas and situations in your life.
In the Module One journal assignment, you chose a topic and article that you will focus on for your final project. In this milestone, which is a first step toward the
successful completion of your final project, you will introduce the article that you have chosen and begin to assess and analyze the argument asserted in the
article.

Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning
After looking over the topics we had to choose from for our Final Project, I chose
Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning. This topic is meant to compare the benefits and
deficits of each way of learning. Online learning is when a course is completed o n the
internet, all assignments submitted online and although there are usually weekly deadlines for
assignments, overall the time spent working on assignments, reading or lessons is up to the
student. Traditional learning is usually when a group of students meet at specified location
and time each week and is taught the lesson during that time by an instructor. The primary
article, Why Online Education Works, by Alex Tabarrok, is skewed toward favoring online
education, however it does go into the benefits of both educations. This seems to be a very
good researched article, giving a brief history of traditional and online learning.
As an older adult returning to education in my 40’s, I greatly appreciate online
education. Obviously, all of us in this course will be biased as we have already chosen this
way of achieving our degrees. I chose online learning because I had attempted courses in
traditional classrooms and was very much turned off by the politics and culture on the
campus. I also felt uncomfortable being significantly older than most of the students and
found the teacher mostly taught to the younger student’s level of maturity and life experience
which I found condescending and frustrating. Also, being a stay at home mom, my schedule
and commitments varies greatly from week to week. Being able to complete assignments and
reading when it convenient for me has been much more motivating for me.
My initial thoughts about comparing the two learning platforms is that overall online
learning is a better fit for most people and moving forward into the future will become more
of the normalized way of education. It is a less expensive way of educating and makes
different levels of education more accessible to a greater audience. The article seems to be a
very good researched article. Although it may be biased, as the title infers, it gives good
arguments for both learnings. Someone deciding between the two will be able to evaluate
which platform best suits their individual circumstance.
Writing formal papers or essays is still a skill I am working on, so I guess the technical
aspects of writing the paper is what scares me the most. Overall, the topic is one I understand
and feel comfortable exploring. Since this is a critical thinking class, my questions are if we
are meant to play devil’s advocate and argue both sides of the topic or mainly decide on one
side to advocate? I will have more questions as the project progresses.
FEEDBACK:
You are off to a good start! Read the comments in each rubric category for specific
feedback about each part of this assignment.
–Dr. Gibson
Introduction: Summary:
You do a good job of giving a quick and accurate summary of the main points of
the article. Nice job!
Introduction: Personal Connection:
You do a good job of establishing a personal connection to this
issue!
Initial Thoughts:
You do a nice job of sharing your initial thoughts about the argument and your
feelings about this challenge. Don’t worry…we are working on this piece by piece,
so I’m here to guide you every step of the way if you read and incorporate my
feedback.
In answer to your question, while you will be developing an alternative argument,
this project is only partly about persuasion. It’s not really a persuasive essay. The
first part is an argument break down and analysis of the primary article associated
with this topic, and the second involves developing and evaluating an alternative
argument.
Articulation of Response:
No major errors–Nice job!
