Unit 6: – Week 5 Discussion Risks, Benefits, and Diagnosis
Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the text and review the
required articles for this week.
The risk-benefit calculation for any drug assumes a correct diagnosis of the disorder. Many
investigators and clinicians feel the current epidemic of child psychiatric disorders is largely due to
inappropriate diagnosis. Evaluate the risk and benefits of using psychoactive drugs in children
correctly diagnosed with a disorder versus those incorrectly diagnosed with a disorder. Consider the
risks and benefits of not treating (drug treatment) a child because he or she is not correctly
diagnosed with a disorder. In your evaluation summarize the natural course of the disorder, the drug
action on the neurotransmitter systems in question, and the likelihood of short-term, long-term, and
permanent positive and negative effects of drug treatment. Make sure to take into account the
ethical dimension of this risk-benefit calculation.
Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues posts and respond to at least two of your
peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier
in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion. What was the
substance of your colleagues argument? Do you agree with this argument? Why, or why not? To
what extent did your colleague consider the ethical dimension to this risk-benefit calculation when
prescribing drugs for children who are too young to be of the age of legal consent? Whether you
agree or disagree with the conclusion, was the ethical aspect dealt with in a responsible manner?
What insights did your colleague include that you had not considered? What might you suggest he
or she consider which was not already included? Please use your research to support your
assertions. Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST)
on Day 7 of the week and respond to anyone who replies to your initial post.
Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate
this Discussion Thread.
This section lists options that can be used to view responses.

For this week decision question I would like to speak on Alprazolam {XANAX}, this medication
is given to children whom have been diagnosed with Anxiety disorders , the drug known as
Xanax is a readily prescribed drug for the following medical diagnoses
 Panic
 Phobias
Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety
 Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ( OCD)
Anxiety disorders typically last six months. Single dose 1.8 hours to reach peak concentration,
elimination of half-life 10-18 hours. Xanax works through Gamma- Aminobutyric Acid
Receptors.
Alpha- Betta- Gamma
Benefits of using Xanax could be a child that responds to life, situations which may arise.
Symptoms may even regress while using Xanax.
Risks of a child using Xanax well it is simple addiction, from what I have read, and from
speaking to others this drug hides in plain sight addiction, and addiction is not freely seen as
addictive. My personal feelings are the following the reason why our society has seen a rash of
opioid abuse and addiction, is due to this medication being prescribed to children? And how
when not even prescribed it is easily attainable in the school yard, at home and through friends.
Addiction is hidden in plain sight from parents and clinicians alike. Or a willingness to label
one’s child with a problem, and it is dealt with more in this way, then in another such as straight
counseling, talk therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy.
Risks of not using an antidepressant medication for your child that has a diagnosis’s could be and
not limited to a child that is repeated incense anxiety, self-harm, chronic refusal to venture away
from home ( isolation). The following are just some symptoms that could occur: physical
problems such as headaches, nausea, gastrointestinal distress, and even not wanting to be left
alone, or detached from the attachment figure. Balance disruption and sleeplessness are some of
the precautions of using this medication. The risk of a child using this medication without having
a diagnoses could more likely be addiction (Advokat, C. D., Comaty, J. E., & Julien, R. M.
(2014).
Just some other tidbits of the use of Xanax, this can cause aggressive like behaviors, pregnancy
and Xanax it’s not good mix causing the fetus to experience withdrawal upon delivery. Cognitive
side effects both short and long term.
 Cognitive impairment
 Confusion
 Poor Attention
And lastly Anterograde Amnesia (Chowdhury, Z. S., Morshed, M. M., Shahriar, M.,
Bhuiyan, M. A., Ashraful Islam, S. M., & Bin Sayeed, M. S. (2016).

Rapid Review 3
Select a psychoactive drug that is of pharmacological interest to you, but not one you
will review as part of your Critical Review or one that was included in your previous
Rapid Reviews. For this paper, you may choose drugs of abuse; however, the paper
must focus on the pharmacology of the drug and not on the social or addictive
aspects. If you focus on addiction and social impact, your paper will not receive credit.
In addition to the text, research a minimum of three peer-reviewed articles published
within the last five years on your selected drug. Prepare a three-page summary of the
drug using the PSY630 Rapid Review Example paper (Links to an external site.)Links to
an external site. as a guide.
In your Rapid Review, analyze and explain the pharmacological aspects of the drug as
they relate to the following: neurotransmitters affected, receptors, route of
administration, half-life, doses, side effects, drug interactions, contraindications, and
other important facets of the drug. Explain these aspects of the drug in terms of the
psychiatric disorders indicated for the drug and the issue(s) associated with that use. If
there is no accepted therapeutic use for the drug, evaluate and describe the actions of
the drug with regard to the abuse process.
The paper:

Must be three to five double-spaced pages in length, excluding title page and
references page, and it must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in
the Ashford Writing Center. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
