The source, Mental Health Beliefs and Their Relationships With Treatment Seeking
Among U.S.OEF/IEF Veterans, aims to address the problem of the veterans who do not seek
mental health care that would profit them. The purpose is to emphasize on the fact that veterans
require mental health care to avoid suffering from a mental illness. This is evidenced by research
done on Operating Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) whereby most of
those who screened positive for a possible illness had not received any care.(Schell, 2008) The
research shows that the OEF/OIF veterans appreciate the presence barriers that may curb them
from seeking mental health care. Concerns about stigma in the workplace were most common
followed by negative beliefs about treatment seeking and stigma from loved ones. Then there
were negative beliefs about mental health treatment followed closely by negative opinions on the
mental illness itself. Behaviorism theory states that actions are determined by life experiences.
Therefore all behaviors are learned which involves stimuli and rewards. The military culture has
rampant cases of stigma, and this has been adopted by all soldiers. No one prefers to seek
medication for fear of mockery (Losh, 2017, p. 18). Losh, S. C. (2017). Behaviorism. The WileyBlackwell Encyclopedia of Social Theory, 1-3. doi:10.1002/9781118430873.est0856
By using credible evidence to support my action plan is essential. First, it will help me to
support my claims and to prove my argument is genuine. Besides, using credible evidence will
help me to connect the audience with my claims as they will seem to be true. Credible evidence
help to prove that the argument being presented apply to real life situations. Lastly, integrating
credible sources will as well elevate my trust and respect from my audiences because I will be in
a position back up my arguments. This article qualifies as credible because of multiple reasons.
First, the article presents in-depth information which is more than two pages and contains an
abstract, a list of relevant references as well as documented data. Upon reading this article, it is

easier to identify the intended audience; veterans and concerned parties in preventing mental
health and abuse of substances among veterans. Also, this article is credible because the authors’
names are provided and there is use of supporting documentation. The authors of this source are
reputable and well-known within this field(Vogt, Fox & Di Leone, 2014).Notwithstanding that
these writers are as well identifiable in writing other similar topics. They all hold high-level
credentials. Further, this article is non-bias, and it is a peer-reviewed source. In fact, data were
subjective to bend for oversampling of female gender and non-response bias. Some of the
supporting documentation incorporated in this source includes tables. Lastly, the article was
published to the public by a credible University online learning tools. Vogt, D., Fox, A. B., & Di
Leone, B. A. (2014). Mental health beliefs and their relationship with treatment seeking among
US OEF/OIF veterans. Journal of Traumatic Stress, 27(3), 307-313. This source is relevant to
this group of veterans since it aims to distinguish how individual attitudes and those of others
affects veterans willingness to look for mental health care. Furthermore, this publication has
provided data regarding the beliefs held by veterans who suffer from mental health and the
reasons behind not seeking mental health care. This information is very pertinent to Veterans
stressed with the stigma and suffering of PTSD for the reason that it would work as evidence of
why those that don’t seek treatment don’t and can point to ways to overcome those obstacles.
Finally, this source discusses the cause of stigma among the OEF and OIF veterans toward
mental health, a matter that is critical to the servicemen and women struggling with the stigma of
PTSD. On the evaluation of the source according to the ethical guidelines of psychology, it is
clear that there is the protection of the participants involved. They are provided with informed
consent and are also debriefed. . ,

The source,Help-Seeking Stigma, and Mental Health Treatment Seeking Among Young
Adult Veterans, aims to address the problem of the public stigma that makes the veterans shy
away from using mental health services. The purpose of this research is to highlight the need for
mental health services among the veterans (Milliken, 2006) and also to try to curb the stigma that
surrounds it so that they may efficiently utilize these services (Bagalman, 2013) The results of
the research show that most of the veterans do not seek mental health care since they do not want
to be considered as weak, however, a vast majority report that they would not think such if one
of them sought treatment. (Pedersen, 2014). This was done by the researcher sampling 812
veterans aged 18 to 34. Education concept can be used to correct misinformation and negative
beliefs and attitudes in the military. Education counters stereotypes and myths and replaces them
with facts. This can be done through campaigns and seminars (Han & Chen, 2014, p. 5). Han, D.,
& Chen, S. (2014). Reducing the stigma of depression through neurobiology-based
psychoeducation: A randomized controlled trial. Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, 68(9),
666-673. doi:10.1111/pcn.12174
This publication focuses on the effects of the perception of stigma as well as the personal
perception of mental health. The main objective of this study was to identify what the perceived
public stigma amongst young servicemen and women is and how that connects to the real stigma.
The study findings show that adverse perceptions of public stigma affects care and are profound
among young adult servicemen and women(Kulesza et al., 2015). One aspect that makes this
source credible is that it was available in a plausible journal conforming to the National Institute
of Health guidelines. This means that it is easier to identify the authors. Again, this source has
provided relevant information that would help veterans regarding the entire biopsychosocial
welfare. Consecutively, this source contained a list of references and integrated supporting

documentation, such as tables and graphs. Kulesza, M., Pedersen, E. R., Corrigan, P. W., &
Marshall, G. N. (2015). Help-seeking stigma and mental health treatment seeking among young
adult veterans. Military behavioral health, 3(4), 230-239. This article is relevant to this group of
veterans because it attempts to handle the main factors in stigma; public stigma as well as
perceived public stigma. Subsequently, the study examined servicemen and women perceptions
of others with mental issues and what exactly they perceived their colleagues to believe. The
findings presented in this paper will help Veterans fraught with the dishonor of PTSD in the
sense that they will be able to overcome various obstacles, including public perception and
stigma that hinder them from seeking mental health care. The source is per the ethical guidelines
in that the subjects are debriefed and there is no deception. a) The researchers recruited
participants through Facebook with eligibility criteria focused on age, year in service, occupation
and internet access. b) Eligible participants were filtered c) Incentives were provided to
participants to encourage them to participate fully. d) Questions about military personnel, i.e.,
pay grade and ranks were asked and their take on mental health and stigma. e) The results
received were analyzed calculating the correlation effects of stigma among the veterans and how
it contributes to mental illness.(Kulesza, Pedersen, Corrigan, & Marshall, 2015) .
