Water, Peace, and War.
When we think about war we usually think about weapons, people dying and bad
economics but research has shown that the next war in the 20th century is going to be about clean
water. Less than 30% of the world population have access to clean water. According to (Graham,
2014, P.257) “Water compounds most of the crises that we are familiar with: many forms of
energy, for instance, require great amounts of water to be produced; the general rise of food prices
that we have witnessed in the past few years is directly linked to water issues.” The time frame
for the next war to happen is getting closer. Water plays a vital role in politics all over the globe;
the author mentions the crisis in 2011 in the middle east which started by the unequally use of
water between the neighbor’s nations; as a result, the inter-country relationships got hurt. The water
crisis has not only affected the middle east but the United States, In Texas and California the water
withdrawals are higher than the renewable water supply. Tomorrow’s resources are being used to
meet the requirements for today’s needs. If the governments around the world knew the importance
of sustainability and how critical water will be in a few years, a future war would be avoided.
Politicians must implement better water’s management in order to create a sustainable world.

Understanding the Social Effects of Water Intervention.
Global public health interventions lean to support access to healthcare and water to provide
solutions to longstanding problems. Without understanding the social effect of public health
solutions, in this case, the meaning of clean water, many relationships around the globe are getting
disrupted. Offering communities access to clean water should be the primary public health
intervention in the world. Some countries around the world have executed water interventions but
mostly occur in Sub-Saharan, Africa. Water can have multiple effects on our lives not only in our
health but in our economic system. Prioritizing water interventions as the government of Africa
will reduce diseases, manage illness in at-risk populations and improve health, which will lead to
positive behavior and a more stable economy. Water has twenty-one elements that are known to
be essential for our health; the three most important are, Calcium, magnesium, and sodium. The
lack of these elements will increase the morbidity and mortality rate in the world. Clean water
represents one of the most significant issues in global health. Which will affect our future
population. In 2001, approximately, four million people died worldwide from waterborne disease.
If governments around the world do not apply interventions for their people to get access to clean
water, the adverse effect will end in a massive world war for water

Part two (Evaluation)
According to my two sources: Water, Peace, and War: Confronting the Global Water
Crisis. (Suner, 2017, pp.273-280) Moreover, Understanding the Social Effects of Water
Intervention. (Zolnikov, 2016, pp 477-495) Have found the importance of clean water to be
critical, we often do not think about how much water we are wasting. For example, leaving the
water run while we brush our teeth. However, Some nations in the middle east and Africa water is
one of the most significant issues. The lack of water is affecting their population, their economy
and even breaking the relationship with other countries. As I mentioned in my first source, Water,
peace, and war. Water’s crisis will soon affect other countries such as the United States, states like
Texas and California are already using more water than they should.
In the second source, the problem is not only the amount of water that is wasted in other countries
but how a lack of water will affect our social behavior and health. We cannot survive or live in
peace in a world where a lack of water will increase illness and the mortality rate.

Part three.
In chapter 6.3 Cultural Differences in Person Perception, this theme is relevant to my
researches because it showed me that one of the issues why we waste water it might be part of who
we are as a culture. As the book mentions, “the culture that we live in has a significant impact on
the way we think about and perceive the world. Moreover, thus it is not surprising that people in
different cultures would tend to think about people at least somewhat differently.” (N.A.,2015,
Principles of Social Psychology, p.262) Even though when water is essential everywhere, different
cultures has its point of view about the importance of water. As an example, when I used to live in
Venezuela, I used to dream about having my pool, but I knew that it would be too expensive to
maintain full of water. On the other hand, after I moved to the United States I realized that the
majority of places in Florida have a private pool and water is very affordable. I realized that what
all my life was a luxury dream, here in the States it is a common thing to have.

Psychological Contributions to Achieving an
Ecologically Sustainable Future for Humanity
Doctor Stuart Oskamp a professor of psychology at Stanford university, brings out the
main issues and solutions for an ecologically sustainability. He mentions how the greenhouse
effects produce by oil, gas, coal and wood are burned goes immediately to the atmosphere
hurting the earth capacity of heat production. Global warming has been produce by
overconsumption of resources by humans. Oskamp claims that by 2020 nearly two billion people
will become environmental refugees because of the ecological destruction created by human’s
behavior. Luckily, in 1990 many nations show interested in how to solve these environmental
issues they even auto-proclaimed themselves environmentalist. On other hand, the ecosystem is
getting affect by human’s overpopulation. The increase of the race has already created illness,
malnutrition and it is affecting all natural resources. It is taking away life time for future
generations. In addition, one of the biggest issues is the overconsumption and the lack of
recycling. According to the author, “the most extreme example is the United States. With only
5% of the Earth’s population, the United States uses about 25% of the Earth’s commercial
energy, and uses it only about half as efficiently as Japan”. Petroleum is the source more use in
production for many materials. Besides, overconsumption is the main source of the earth’s
environmental problems such as, under conservation of natural resources. The government of the
United States have applied a movement of reduce, reuse, recycle. In order to help to decreased
the pollution around the country. Studies have shown that educating people about earth’s
environment would help to reduced global warming.

The Emerging Field of Conservation Psychology
According to the psychologist Carol Saunders, Conservation psychology is projected to
teach us a better relationship with the mother nature and social sciences, between psychology
and the other social sciences. The primary goal is sustainability on planet earth. Biology plays
an essential role in conservation psychology; It teaches how to preserve and value our
biodiversity by sharing the same goal, environmental sustainability. It is critical to understand
how important it is for humans to have a relationship with nature. Besides, psychologies have
worked with other social sciences groups such as environmental sociology, anthropologies, and
biological ecologists. Research has shown the interactions of humans from a psychologic aspect
with the environment. Some studies include The Human Dimensions of wildlife and Human
Dimensions of Global Change. Saunders mentions, that the discipline of conservation
psychology is trying to find a different solution for the main concerns about environmental
sustainability, conservations of ecosystems and quality of life. Some studies mention how
human’s behavior is going to be influenced by the changes in our environment. Conservation
Psychology research it is also descriptive and theoretical investigates, experiments are exploring
how to cause the kinds of changes that decrease the impact of human behavior on the ecosystem,
and that lead to more sustainable and relationships with the environment.
Contributions from the Social
Representations Approach
State by the psychologist Paula Castro, the efforts from sciences and psychologies have
develop a concern about an environmental science. In 1970 there have been three major issues

that research has been focusing on more, Incipient rhetorical integration among frameworks
dominating research, insufficient reflection about the assumption and measurements of concepts
employed and a need for new research questions to push studies beyond the analysis of the sociodemographical. In the last year humans have experience a rise of the ecological cause. From the
70s the concerns around the world about the environment changes have become a major topic.
The need to understand the relationship between humanity-nature and how people think about
the environment have been a big motivation for new studies. Social psychologies have form part
of these experiments trying to understand people’s behaviors, values and attitude worldwide
about the environmental concern. In the past fifteen years the topic of sustainability issues and
sustainable development has increase in the psychological field. Until mid 90s there was not
many enough information neither talk about the worldwide view of natural disaster caused by
pollution or disrespect of the environment. On the other hand, incipient dialogue among
frameworks, showed epistemological assumptions of different studies which make the
understanding of it unclear and confuse for people. As a result, this paper mentions that the
researchers need to clarify the theories and answering the three major concerns of environmental
concerns in our society and experiments.
The Perfect Fit for my Project
The article Psychological Contributions to Achieving an Ecologically Sustainable Future
for Humanity, written by Oskam (2000). It fits my paper because, it explains the reason why our
quality of life in earth is decreasing thanks to our environmental behavior. The author gives
specific details about possible solutions, and facts of why taking care of natural resources such as
water, it is essential for our society.

Introduction Draft
What it is sustainability? And why it is important for global peace? According to Dr.
Oskamp (2000). “The United States is not only the largest user of energy, but also the most
wasteful, our nation’s behavior change is critical to the world.” Natural resources such as clear
water need to be management better or the human race will be affected by the consequences of
lack of knowledge about environment preservation. If humans do not take care of water
resources soon we will experience the third world war. Various psychologist has studied the
importance of the nature in human’s behavior and why creating a more sustainable ecosystem
will prevent us from having a war. Mentioned by Psychology Castro (2006, p. 250). “The subject
of environmental concern has interested sociology, anthropology, political science, besides
psychology and social psychology, and, as mentioned, a literature has arisen where research
largely relies upon concepts such as beliefs, attitudes, representations, values, norms,
worldviews, rationalities and discourses”. The goal of my paper is to introduce the consequence
of sustainability focusing on potable water to avoid a world war in the next few years. Stated by
Saunders (2003, p. 137). “The growing recognition that the social sciences play a
key role in conservation requires more efficient ways for working together toward a common
mission.”
