Assignment #4: Ch 10 Persuasive Messages
Persuade New Parents to Open a Retirement Account
Due: Wednesday, March 27th
Objective: Write an email that persuades new parents (people having their first baby) to start a retirement
account.
Scenario: Assume you are a financial services representative looking to increase enrollment in retirement
accounts for new parents.
Your task: Write a message that targets new parents and persuades them to start saving for retirement. Look
for information on-line about the benefits of saving for new parents. Spend some time researching the topic
and learning about options before writing your email.
Follow the guidelines of components of a persuasive message in Chapter 10: Persuasive Messages. In Chapter
10 of our textbook, there is also a good example of a “Mass Sales Email” that you should also look at.
Follow the 3 Step Process Below:
Step 1: Plan (Write your outline)
• Identify the purpose of your email and needs of your audience.
• Gather and organize information for the email. Ask yourself questions such as:
1. Why should new parents pay attention to your suggestion? What are benefits for them to open up a
retirement account?
2. How will you get new parents’ attention when this may not be something they have been thinking
about? (Both in the subject line and in the email itself).
3. How can you motivate new parents to do what you are suggesting?
4. What tone will you try to project in your email?
5. What rationale and logic do you think your audience (new parents) will need? Will you use an
emotional or logical appeal (or a mix of both)? Why?
6. What are new parents’ basic needs, and what benefits can you offer?
7. What counterpoints must you introduce?
• Create an outline for a logical, direct, complete and detail-oriented message.
Step 2: Write (Write your rough draft)
• Write the persuasive email. MAX word count = 275.
• Don’t forget to put your request in the format of an email (include subject line, to/from, email signature,
introduction, main points with rationale, concluding statement with a call to action, etc.).
• Ensure you are incorporating the format, structure and components of a persuasive business message
(Chapter 10).

Step 3: Revise (Revise and edit rough draft to create your final draft)
• Proofread your first draft for grammar, spelling, and punctuation (*Use Grammarly to help with
proofreading)
• CHECK FOR PLAGIARISM. If you use information and data in your email from your research, you must
refer to your source(s). Adding sources increases the credibility of your email and avoids plagiarism.
• Direct quotes should be in quotation marks. Otherwise it is plagiarism! Here are some examples on
how to refer to sources within your email:
o According to Forbes Magazine, 20% of employees are actively looking for new employment.
o Dana Parker from Harvard Business Review says “70% of companies we spoke to do not have an
employee retention plan.”
o Gen Z is overwhelmingly said they would choose a job that supports their work life balance over
a higher salary (www.money.com).
• Include a “References” page of the sources used in your email in APA format
• Edit for clarity and conciseness.
• Ensure you are keeping your audience and their needs in mind.
DIRECTIONS FOR HANDING IN YOUR ASSIGNMENT:

Submit your final draft only of the entire assignment to Blackboard before class starts.
Bring to class:
o Paper copy of the outline.
o Paper copy of rough draft with your editing.
o Paper copy of your typed, final hard copy – EMAIL FORMAT.
