The subject of my assignment: Organ Transplant Education
My Major and the reason this topic will be beneficial to me
My major is political science, but I am interested in organ transplant education, a passion
explicitly shaped by my personal experiences. I had a close relative who waited for a kidney
transplant for a few years in vain. The excruciating and debilitating pain as well as the severe
symptoms I witnessed my family member undergo made me vow one day to try to change the
course for victims of kidney failure for good. There were instances he could encounter
unexplained swelling around the ankles, legs, and feet (a condition termed edema), which
doctors attributed to the failure of the kidneys to remove the extra waste from the body.
Sometimes the symptoms manifested as shortness of breath, constant nausea, or persistent
fatigue and drowsiness (Stone & Rabin, 2013).
The medical bills were overboard, and the entire family struggled to keep up with the
piling costs. We at some point organized for a fundraiser and we managed to collect close to
$100,000 for a kidney transplant, which his medical team believed was the ultimate solution to
his condition. The main issue was not even footing these medical bills, but finding a willing
kidney donor and the right organ for transplantation. We also had several ethical concerns

regarding the potential organ donation procedure, including the possible repercussions that can
occur due to kidney rejection, what doctors associate with the body’s immune response.
This topic will be beneficial to me because it will assist me in understanding the entire
subject of kidney and other organ transplants, including where to get the right donors, the risks
involved, the role of tissue engineering in enhancing organ transplant, and many others. I am
passionate about spreading the word on the importance of becoming a donor to assist individuals
with kidney failure. Even though I am destined for a possible successful career in political
science, I believe I have an inner drive to support kidney patients to get donors. I am, therefore,
using this newsletter to encourage people to donate their kidneys to save lives willingly.
Purpose &Intended Audience
The primary target audience of my newsletter is the general public, and the principal
purpose is to educate people about the benefits of becoming an organ donor. My hope is others
will read my newsletter and choose to become willing donors without being pressured by
external drivers like money. This is the only way I believe can increase the supply of kidneys for
patients. Through my teaching, people will understand that it is much possible to lead a healthy
lifestyle with just one kidney, contrary to the misinformed perception by many that transplants
are risky and are fatal. I will also use this platform to enlighten people about the benefits of
assisting others, mainly the humanitarian reason to save lives.
Main Points
I plan to explore myths, facts, and benefits. For myths, I intend to address the
misalignment that kidney donation, or any other organ donation, can mutilate the donor’s body,
by rendering it less functional (Bahrami, Khaleghi, Vakilzadeh, & Afzalaghaee, 2017). I will

assure my audience by giving statistical data about donors that live healthy and happy lives
several years after donating their organs. Also, as part of the newsletter, I am going to include
some data about how many people are waiting on the transplant list as well as how many die
each year due to not receiving a transplant. This will assist motivate people to give their kidneys
willingly to save lives.
