ASSIGNMENT 1 PROJECT
2
Summary
In contemporary society, the rate of high school dropout is skyrocketing at an alarming
rate in Guyana. The rising rate of high school dropout is a big headache and puzzle that need to
be addressed before things get out of hand. Studies have shown that students drop out of school
because of factors such as drug use, academic failure, disengagement, teen pregnancy, financial
difficulties, mental illness, and disabilities. According to the statistics by the Ministry of
Education, Guyana, more than 13844 students dropped out of high school in the year 2017,
representing 4 percent of the national population (Bristol, 2017). With the rising rate of dropouts
in Guyana, there is a need to work with high school dropouts to ensure that they understand the
need for completing their high school studies.
Objectives and Goals
The prime objective of this paper is to work with high school dropouts to enhance their
skills and at least place 10 in the workforce at the end of a year. Another objective is to reduce
dropout rates in high schools, by offering free counseling services aimed at changing the mindset
of students in learning (Kerzner & Kerzner, 2017). Students will also be offered with support
adjusted to their individual needs and thereby elevating their personal skills. The project also
focuses on identifying at-risk students, evaluating their needs and offering them with flexible
support. The project will also emphasize on individual student achievement in learning
environment and means of achieving greater success.
Other objectives are to involve all kind of students, be more politically aware, and to
develop creative lessons to improve learning and teaching. Focusing on all kind of students is
very important because it helps to minimize gender biases (Larson & Gray, 2015). The project

also focuses on identifying strategies to self-motivate students, improve student’s coping with
bullying, and to develop key competencies, such as social, self, and media awareness, and
strategies to elevate professional opportunities within the future life of the students.
The main goal is to raise awareness in order to curb future dropouts by at least 10% and
assist students to appreciate the value of education in their lives. In addition, the project is geared
towards assisting students, teachers, donors, volunteers, the ministry of education, and other
relevant stakeholders to understand long term implications and impact of school dropout to the
society, individual, and society. Another goal is to strengthen school, community, family
partnerships in order to eradicate students indulging in alcoholism and drug use which are major
causes of school dropouts.
To achieve the goals and objectives, the project will use wide arrays of strategies to deal
with high school dropouts. For instance, the project will partner with donors and volunteers. The
function of donors will basically to offer financial support in order to fuel project operation. The
donors will be sourced from various part of the country. Partnership with volunteers is critical in
the sense that it helps to minimize the cost incurred in the running the operation of the project
(Kerzner & Kerzner, 2017). Other stakeholders such as teachers, the ministry of education, and
relevant government agencies will mainly be to offer advisory services to the team running the
project. Ministry of education will offer guidelines that dictate the general operation of the
project.
Project Structure to Use
In this project, functional structure is used to manage the operation of the project. In a
functional structure, people with similar skills are grouped together. For instance, counselors

might be grouped with teachers in order to help align properly the education program (Larson &
Gray, 2015). Since functional structure relies on specialization, it leads to operational
efficiencies and it enhances the success of the project. Because of the expertise, project members
grouped at a particular group can perform task efficiency, quickly, and with more confidence,
thus helping to improve the productivity of the project.
The functional structure uses a linear chain of command. This is an important
characteristic of functional structure because it ensures that every member of the project knows
his or her role. Since this structure relies on both horizontal and vertical flow of communication,
it promotes proper sharing of ideas that will support the success of the project. The structure also
offers obvious motivation to the team members (Kerzner & Kerzner, 2017). This is because each
and every member has a role to play. Unlike other project structures, the functional structure has
a clear reporting structure. Every member knows who to report to whenever they need any
clarification or other project-related inquiries.
Key Customers and Stakeholders and their Roles
The key stakeholders in this project are donors and volunteers. The other stakeholder
with vested interest includes ministry of education, parents, and high school teachers. The main
role of donors is to provide financial support that aid in running the operation of the project. The
donors also ensure that there is accountability in how the finance they contributed is utilized
(Kerzner & Kerzner, 2017). This is critical in the sense that it helps in minimizing the chances of
mismanagement of funds by errand project members. Since donors are sourced from various
parts of the country, they need to be regularly updated on the operation of the project. Donors
work with other multi-agency donors to lobby for extra funds to facilitate the operation of the
project.

The donors also play the role of advisory, and especially on how the funds contributed
can be utilized to ensure that the project is a success. The donors also ensure that money spend
are done under the accounting and financial policies of the country. As a result, it helps the
project to work under the policies of the country. They also ensure that the financial resources
are tailored towards achieving the objectives of the project. Without the support of donors, the
project is doomed to fail because it will be difficult to run the entire project. It is important to
understand that finances are a cornerstone for every project.
The volunteers play an important role in the project because they help to support the
smooth running of the project. Since volunteers come from various walks of life, they offer
various skills and expertise that will ensure that the project realize its objectives and goals. The
volunteers also save the project with millions of money because most of their services are free.
The volunteers also ensure that there is a lean operation in the running of the project (Lock,
2017). Because the motives of volunteers in the project are to accomplish the project rather than
because they need the money, it is safe to say that volunteers ensure that things are done.
The key customers in this project are youths between 18 to 21 years. They are the key
customers because they are the major participants and prime beneficiaries of the project. Studies
have shown that these groups of the students are more vulnerable to drop out of schools. Hence,
this project will help them appreciate the basic importance of high school education. Youths are
important to the future economy and general development of the country (Lock, 2017).
Therefore, tailoring this project to them is not only beneficial to individual students, but also to
the community and economy at large.
