Israel vs. Palestine: A Never-Ending War
INTRODUCTION
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has left the land in bloodshed, also leaving the population
in the state of divisiveness. The battle over land has left the country filled with hatred and has
created mass violence. Many have been suffering on this land for a very long time. This issue
has cost many to lose their lives and lose their homes. This land has mostly spread anger among
humans than actually focusing to achieve a resolution.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
This ongoing conflict began in the early 20th century; the Israeli land was all of Palestine,
a part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire. After World War One, Palestine was taken over by
Britain (Historical Timeline). Following those years, hundreds of Jews escaped the European
countries because of the erupting anti-semitic violence. This movement resulted in Zionism;
European Jews escaped persecution and want to claim their own state. The relocation of Jews
created tensions between Jews and Arabs. In 1947, the United Nations proposed a partition plan
that would separate the land into two states: One being the Jewish state and the other being an
Arab state. Jews accepted this proposal. Jews founded their state, Israel. However, the
Palestinians didn’t want their land given off to Israel(Bailey). They believed Palestine should be
one country that controlled all. A day after Palestinians rejected the proposal, Israel declared
independence from the Palestinian state; the first Israeli-Arab war in 1948 commenced
(Historical Timeline). After the war, “ Israel had conquered 78 percent of Palestine; three-
Jauhal 2
quarters of a million Palestinians had been made refugees; over 500 towns and villages had
been obliterated; and a new map was drawn up, in which every city, river and hillock received a
new, Hebrew name, as all vestiges of the Palestinian culture were to be erased”(A Synopsis).
Furthermore, the land was divided up into three parts: the State of Israel, West Bank, and the
Gaza strip. About 700,000 Palestinians became refugees. Of the ones who fled the newly
emplaced Israeli state, one-third moved to the West Bank (controlled by Jordan), one-third
escaped to the Gaza Strip (controlled by Egypt), and the rest of the population scattered into
Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria (Historical Timeline). Hatred grew larger from both sides. Twenty
years and regular fighting continued around the borders with the neighboring countries. To
combat the rising state of Israel, the Palestinians had created The Palestine Liberation
Organization (PLO), this would aim to achieve independence and secure the displaced refugees;
this group was only legitimized to be the representative of the Palestinian people in 1974. On
June 5th, 1967, Israel struck against Egypt and their allied countries (Syria and Jordan) this battle
was the six-day war. In six days Israel conquered the battle. Israel became five times the size;
borders had been pushed back, occupying Golan Heights, West Bank, and the entire Sinai
Peninsula (Israel and Palestine the Truth). 1973 of October, a war unleashed between Israel and
Egypt in the Sinai and Syria in the Golan Heights: “ceasefire was achieved (U.N. resolution 339)
and U.N. peacekeepers deployed on both the fronts, only withdrawing from the Egyptian front
after Israel and Egypt concluded a peace treaty in 1979. U.N. peacekeepers remain deployed in
the Golan Heights”(Bailey). However, the Palestinians conflict was and still is far away from
obtaining peace. In 1987, the first Intifada began. It was a way to “shake” up the Israeli
government: “Conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including Jerusalem, after more than
20 years of military occupation, repression and confiscation of land, contributed to a Palestinian
Jauhal 3
uprising[against the Israeli]…Between 1987 and 1993, over 1,000 Palestinians were killed and
thousands injured, detained, imprisoned in Israel or deported from the Palestinian
territories”(Bailey). The outbreak of violence hadn’t reduced; however, a peace process did get
attempted. In 1993, a peace process between Israel and PLO did start though short-lived when
Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli prime minister got assassinated in 1995 (Bailey). After his death,
many peace summits and proposals were presented to both parties, though none were successful.
In 2000, the second intifada arose, and violence erupted from both sides. Since then efforts have
been made, but this land conflict is backtracking leaving both populations in a state of
divisiveness and anger towards one another(Historical Timeline). Over a land dispute, hundreds
and thousands have died, been displaced, and sided from their own land. This Holy Land is a
bitter and long-lasting war between two sides whose goals are the same, yet are incapable of
finding a middle ground to accommodate the majorities needs.
CURRENT SITUATION
As of December 6th, 2017, President Donald J. Trump recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s
capital. He ordered the U.S embassy to open there. It is a sensitive decision that did not sit well
with the Palestinians. They’ve been fighting with Israel for years over this land issue. This
declaration broke out the Palestinians into anger and frustration. On May 14, 2018, the U.S
embassy opened and left many affected: “At least 58 Palestinians were killed and more than
2,700 injured in Gaza as deadly protests took place ahead of, during and after the ceremony in
Jerusalem, making it the deadliest day there since the 2014 Gaza war”(Historical Timeline). As
recent as of summer 2018, on July 19th, Israeli Knesset passed a law announcing Israel as a
Jewish State, Hebrew as an official language, and the undivided Jerusalem as the Capital. Israel’s
parliament passed this controversial law characterizing the country of being mainly a Jewish
Jauhal 4
state, firing up the Arab minority (Historical Timeline). A lot of racism is taking part in every
part of the land. Hatred is displayed out against the two parties; soldiers against citizens, citizen
against citizen, government against citizen, and government against government. It is a cycle of
hatred that is never-ending: “The Israeli government continued to enforce severe and
discriminatory restrictions on Palestinians’ human rights; restrict the movement of people and
goods into and out of the Gaza Strip; and facilitate the unlawful transfer of Israeli citizens to
settlements in the occupied West Bank”(Israel and Palestine). The Israelis land control is harshly
treating the Palestinians, and discrimination is present. Israeli soldiers and civilians are
destroying buildings owned by Palestinians. Hundreds of children, families, and activists
have died, been injured and incarcerated. Thousands are affected daily by this hatred.
CONCLUSION
The land battle between Israel and Palestine is in a continuous fight. This division has
killed many. This blood thirsted battle left many to lose their homes; also, regularly feeling
unwelcome in own homeland. They mostly are discriminated against and treated unequally.
Wanting to control the land and its people drove many wars to mass destruction, obtaining no
solution.
