Thesis
Recreational use of Marijuana should remain illegal.
Ruiz, P., Strain, E. C., & Lowinson, J. H. (2011). Lowinson and Ruiz’s substance abuse: A
comprehensive textbook. Philadelphia: Wolters Kluwer/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
Health.
Marijuana is detrimental to the health of its users despite the common presumption that it
has no side effects. According to the book, regular users of marijuana suffer from “decreased
verbal learning and memory and have deficits in complex reaction time, complex reasoning, and
short-term memory” (431). Additionally, it impairs the functional capacity of an individual with
respect to driving, academic performance, and motivation. Furthermore, the use of marijuana
affects male and female reproductive hormones, compromises the immune system, and
predisposes the user to several types of cancers. The use of marijuana is, therefore detrimental to
health. This source supports the topic by demonstrating the negative effects of marijuana leading
to the conclusion that it should remain illegal.

March 19, 2019, from BBC NEWS: https://www.bbc.com/news/education-44533537
Most young people consider Marijuana to be safer than alcohol and tobacco according to
the responses of the youth sampled in the article. For instance, Faye, a twenty-two year old says
that when growing up, emphasis was placed on the health consequences of alcohol and smoking
while the effects of marijuana were ignored. Consequently, many people who are opposed to

drinking and smoking fail to show a similar attitude towards marijuana. Darren, who is two years
older than Faye and uses marijuana agrees that according to many of his peers, marijuana is safer
than smoking and drinking. Like Faye, he bases his response on the fact that the negative health
consequences of alcohol and tobacco are publicized, but nothing is said about marijuana.
Furthermore, for their generation, the use of marijuana has been normalized regardless of the
evident effects. Darren, for instance, claims that the drug has affected his grades and overall
achievement. The article proves that marijuana is detrimental to academic and general
achievement. It also proves that the use of the drug particularly by the youth is due to lack of
sensitization on its harmful effects. Its use should, therefore, remain illegal in the states which
have not made it legal and be made illegal in those which have legalized its use. The article
depicts the attitude towards marijuana as one based on misleading information.
MacDonald, K., & Pappas, K. (2016). WHY NOT POT?: A Review of the Brain-based Risks of
Cannabis. Innovations in clinical neuroscience, 13(3-4), 13-22.
According to the article, marijuana is the most commonly used drug in the world. 9% of
the drug’s first-time users develop dependence, and a significant number of its users become
addicted. Furthermore, the prevalence of the use of the drug has been rising at a high rate. In the
United States, for instance, the use of the drug doubled in the twelve years between 2001 and
2013 with the number of disorders associated with its use rising to close to 3%. The increasing
rise of marijuana is worrying, particularly considering its detrimental health effects such as
causing mental illness and impairing decision making. The source reviews the statistics on the
use of marijuana to demonstrate the increasing usage of the drug.
